Mary is dead

My mom came back to CA from Miami this past weekend to celebrate her 57th birthday. This morning her friend Mary, along with her daughter, tried to bring mom to the airport this morning to see her off after the week of celebrating. She had a heart attack on the way and they had to stop at the hospital. Mary didn't make it.

When she came to visit us at the hotel this weekend, my mom mentioned how bloated she looked. It's a tell tale sign that fluid is built up, kidneys are failing and dialysis is needed. She was a very big woman with diabetes and knew the time was coming. Doctors has been trying to get her started on dialysis for the last 2 years, but she refused. I suspect seeing what my mom has been through in the past 5 years (dialysis problems, blood infections, heart surgery, toe amputations) scared her just a bit and she was in deep denial about whether she really needed to start treatments.

I am so sad and my mom is absolutely crushed that her friend is gone so suddenly. But just like that a life can end. She was a good person with a kind heart and has done a lot for my mom over the years. I just wish she'd taken better care of herself.

So now in addition to my mom's situation I have another reason to keep on doing what I'm doing. This weight loss struggle will never be over, but it gets easier with time and it's certainly worth it. I will never, ever, EVER regret going on my fast to lose the extra weight, and I will not regret going back on it to lose a few more pounds when the time comes. Right now I'm maintaining, eating fairly well and riding my bike to work 2-3 times a week. I know what future is in store for me if I don't keep on keeping on.

Mary, rest in peace and we love you forever.

OMG! How terrible. My thoughts and prayers go out to your Mother and you right now. May God give you the strength to get through this difficult time.

That is so sad about poor Mary. Her family and friends must be devastated. It probably scared your mom too. This really brings home the point that trying to maintain health and a reasonable weight is so very important to our quality and length of life.
