martials and weight training

hey i know ive discussed alot about martial artists and weight traing and what not but anyways im just curious about all of you martial artists on this site and i was just wondering what other martial artists do when it comes to weight training and martial artists (in simple terms what is your training scedule and what do you do in your routine?) Im only asking out of curiousity

I'll start with my routine

I mainly do 3 sets of 8 to 12 reps (at the most) except for the abs in which i do more then 12 so far at the most ive been doing 20 reps at the most cuz i want nice strong abs not huge big abs that look like a beer belly and heres my training schedule for the week

Monday- Back, Biceps, Forearms

Tuesday- Tenchi Kenpo class

Wendsday Tenchi Kenpo class

Thursday- Legs

Friday- Chest, Triceps, Shoulders

Saturday- Tenchi Kenpo class

Sunday- Rest

i try to kep my workouts at least an hour and under 2 hours I'll do cardio before my weight training like tredmill just as a warm up not the whole 30 minutes. i trian my core (abs lower back and obliques only two days monday and friday) my goal is to do cardio for 20 minutes each session so far i am at 9 minutes without getting to tired i make sure i dont overtrain definetly and i keep a good strict diet and though i aint no nutrionist or personal trainer i sure am well determined more determined then i ever was and if i need to make changes in my routine i will but im still a student in high school so after i get out of high school ill try to get a better schedule

P.S. this is a chance for martial artists to help each other out cuz i feel that this site should have a martial arts section on this site to go along with the weight training cuz i know bodybuilding.com has one heres a section of it that i find very useful to any martial artist beginner, intermediate, expert, or even grandmaster http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/ss3.htm lol BTW im only a 4th kyu in tenchi kenpo hope to be a black belt soon and get in the best shape of my life.

I'm not taking any class regularly, so I train whenever I want...so the two never really get in the way.

If I were you I'd be working full body routines and working compound excercises like benchpress, power cleans, clean and jerks, deadlifts, squats, pull ups, etc.

At the moment, most of my MA training is down to once a week and, on a rare basis, twice a week. I generally have MMA on Saturdays and Hapkido once every 3 weeks. My main concern at the moment is getting stronger, faster, and more technique for throwing. I spend 3-4 days a week in the gym and usually concentrate on oly lifts and compound movements. I do an upper/lower split but will be moving onto a modified One Lift a Day program (it'll be 2 lifts plus pre-hab stuff).

An example of what my training will look like (as the days can vary sometimes)
M-Clean&Jerk, rev hypers, abs
T-bench, row, rotator cuff, throw
W-back squat/front squat
Th-off
F-push press, deadlift
Sat-snatch, throw
Sun-off

Hope this helps

My cousin is huge on martial arts, and he basically trains whenever he feels like he wants to, he's very good at what he does, almost got signed up for UFC. All he has in the way of training equipment is: Himself, a barbell, and maybe 150 lbs in weights. He is about 6'1" and 185 lbs, he has no real training scheduel at all. He does work out a lot though. He still goes to school; so it's probably not as much as he should.

P.S. aevans410- I would be in favor of a martial arts forum as well.

I really like book on the topic. I have read it and it is a phenomenal book for the martial artist and non martial artist alike!

yea im back from school and just not to long ago i did a little bit of a workout out. I managed to get one in today and at the same time get my passport(going to ireland in march) hope theres gyms over there, but maybe i deserve the vacation. oh well im please at my results now im really coming in good just gotta stick with it and eat the right food

I know we've discussed stretching and strength, but since this is a martial arts emphasis, I wanted to bring it up again. Do you guys continue your stretches or do you not even bother with them anymore? I am at a crossroads right now...

well before begining tenchi kenpo training my sensai ussually has us do stretchs and even when im training tenchi kenpo on my own i find myself stretching the same way he has us do it and i always do it before my actual training. hell ill even do it when im weight training i try to make it a habit because no one and i mean no one wants injured muscles. but then again i know as well as any of you guys that im no personal trainer or nutritionist, but there is one thing that anyone must know about me its that when i have a goal i am well determined and will almost stop at nothing to achieve my goal. in fact march 2 this year i will be heading to ireland the land in which my ancestors had came from the gods be pleased that i will finally be able to see the land in which many ancient celtic warriors had faught and died. thats another goal that shall be accomplished but however unfortinetly it my interfear with my diet cuz my parents will be there with me and they dont eat on a timer like i do in fact they dont do alot of things i do no wonder why we hardly get along...........O_O yea but thats personal stuff that i need to handle i guess

oh and BTW JP i dont know if you already realized it but that article on bodybuilding.com was from alwyn cosgrove i just realized that maybe ill try to get that book, but keyword maybe same thing with the spartan warrior regime that book seems really promising

What. The. Hell.

The matter I was addressing was the effect that stretching had on muscle elasticity and therefore strength.

my bad lei man but then again i dont know if i can really comment on that cuz like i said before and hell i think ill say it a million more times im still trying to figure out things for myself and i may not be a personal trainer or nutrionist but i sure know alot more then i did a year ago and im not even 18 yet

Don't sweat it, Ryo...

My biggest concern right now are my hip flexors. They are flexible as hell, but can't hold ****. I mean I can't even do a V sit for crying out loud...

Evo, you said you do yoga, is that something you'd recommend to someone in this sitation? What type?

I would do Hatha Yoga given your situation. I think that stretching should be done fairly frequently because we can lose our flexibility if we do not stretch. 15-20 minutes spent stretching 3-4 times a week is usually sufficient to keep flexibility levels up.
