Making the Change

Hi everyone! I see this is where newcomers go to introduce themselves, so I thought I'd stop by. My name is Belinda, if you couldn't tell by my display name :p My birthday is right around the corner, so I'm going to go ahead and say I'm 24. I've been with my husband for almost seven years, married for four of them in May. We have a spitfire four-year-old. And I'm the stay-at-home parent.

I'm 5'4'' and 195lbs. My husband is 5'11'' and 230lbs. We've both decided it's time to make a change. Today we bought memberships to the local wellness center, but it doesn't start until April 1st. I plan on meeting with a personal trainer early on. Because I'm a SAHM and my daughter has pre-k in the mornings AND the wellness center has a nursery, I'll have a wide range of opportunities be more active than what I am. I can't say the same for my husband though, he works a full-time job, 30 miles from home and so he's pretty much out of time from about 7:30 in the morning until 6:30 in the evening. His window for working out is much more narrow (late evenings and weekends) and so we probably won't be working out together much.

My personal goal is to lose about 50lbs. I'd be happy with getting back to my pre-baby weight which was the high 150s, but I want to go further. So I've set this goal to be in the 140s which is about where I was when my husband and I first met. I have a lot of weight in my legs, not just fat but muscle as well. Other "soft" areas I'd like to concentrate on are my upper arms and belly.

A year ago I lost about 20lbs drinking SlimFast and switching from Dr. Pepper to Sprite, but I gained all of that back. It was very discouraging but also a learning experience. I've also come to the conclusion that I need to have a permanent change in my diet in order to keep the weight off. So I'll be looking around for information on that as well.

So I have my long-term weight loss goal and because my membership contract at the center is for six months, I'd like have a short-term goal of 30lbs or more gone by the end of September. That averages out to 5lbs/mo.

I'm looking forward to being a member on this forum, getting information and inspiration, and sharing my progress with you guys.

Welcome to the forum.

You will find lots of great information on exercise and nutrition in those sections.

I must admit that I tried Slimfast shakes in the many failed diet attempts that I did prior to the 2007 project where I got to my goal weight... I found the notion of combining regular exercise with controlled healthy eating to be a lot more successful... For one thing - it was a more normal way of eating and for another thing I was adopting new habits which helped after I had got to goal weight... I think that it will be good for you too.

Don't be perturbed about my recent weight gain... I have had a very stressful couple of years - and true to form - I lapsed...

Maybe your husband would be able to slot in a little exercise while he is at work... Lots of people manage to slot in some exercise at lunch time... People do not think of it as exercise - but actually walking is a very good form of exercise... I credit it with the main form of exercise that I used in my big project... If he popped out of the office for a walk every lunchtime - it would benefit him...

Your weight loss goals certainly sound realistic to me.

You may find clubs and challenges useful for making forum friends and thus building your support network. I know that San is kicking off a new challenge soon so you could think about both joining that.

Welcome Belinda! Thanks for dropping by my profile!

I second what Omega says about combining exercise with healthy eating. It's a healthy lifestyle that you can adopt as part of your life forever...as opposed to the shakes and other supplements. Some of those can work as part of the solution, but ideally we all just need to learn to live and eat healthy.

BTW, good for you for attacking this now, while you're still young. I gave up too many years to poor health.
