Making plain rice, not so plain.

Im looking for some good healthy ideas to make my rice with my meals a little bit more tasty. Plain rice isnt bad, but yea, its plain. Any good spices or anything that I can add that will still keep it healthy?

tastes good on anything.

Japanese style

When I was living in Japan I had to do lots of different things with rice.

The most basic is go to an asian supermarket and look for something called Furikake. It comes in a small jar and is a mix of nori (seeweed used in sushi rolls), sesame, sometimes egg bits, and a few other things. Makes rice taste really good and all you do is sprinkle it on.

Another thing I used to do is just mix an egg into the rice just before it's finished cooking. The heat from the rice cooks the egg mostly, but it still coats the rice. You can add a bit of soy sauce if you like.

I used to also just throw bits of ginger into the rice cooker (or pot if you don't have one). Gives it a subtle taste.

Hope this helps!

When I make brown rice or couscous I add a little bit of flax oil and crumble in 1 to 2 (depending on what im eating it with) cubes of McCormick's Vegetable Broth. There's nothing unhealthy about broth..just make sure you read the ingredients carefully. This can make plain tasting brown rice or cous cous quite tasty. So basically, I'm seconding what abear said. I don't care for adding cajun to the mix though. The oil makes it a little fluffier and more moist, as I tend to overcook. Flax oil because it's very good for you, and more importantly in this case (as you're using very little), doesn't leave a strong oily taste.

Dunno about the states...
They sell it everywhere in the UK and its legendary for putting on bacon butties!!!

Hmmm Bacon buttie....

I love adding shredded seasoned and grilled chicken, then some chopped cilantro, salt, creole seasoning, caramelized onions & garlic, cucumber, fresh tomatos... maybe some hot sauce and then plop it all into a whole wheat tortilla or something. Sour cream for those who aren't afraid of dairy.

currently my favorite rice mate

Black Beans!

I've always loved them and beans/legumes are always great for fiber and protein!

I crack out a dish with red peppers, green peppers, onion, garlic, rice and black beans a few times a week. Low in cals, high in fiber and protein. And tasty!

Do you only want to add juices/spices, or do you want to make it more of a meal?

I have plenty of recipes that call for adding some lemon or OJ, let me know and I’ll get the exact measurements for you.

For more of a dinner dish, DD likes a scrambled egg added, with some veggies like sautéed onion, celery, and pepper. Ginger to taste.

Buy some dried cranberries. I'm assuming you are eating slow cooking brown rice, not the other crap. Just before the rice is done, mix in some of the cranberries. This is quite excellent with 5 oz (about 2 slices, 1/4 inch thick) of pork loin, excess fat trimmed. And it's healthy.

I did a stir fry with my chicken and veggies. I cooked the rice first, then started sauteeing my chicken and veggies. Throw my rice in with some garlic, tasted great.

Mix in baked beans or chili with your rice for a complete meal. Popeyes Chicken has a Cajun Beans and Rice side that is tasty, but, of course, they use white rice, so it is not as healthy as it could be!
