So yeah here we go. I'm not quite sure what I've gotten myself in for.

I've always been relatively sporty and active, and for the last year or so, I've been playing rugby matches, and playing 5 a side football every week.

People are always surprised when they hear my weight. Apparently my height hides the fact that I'm overweight.

I've probably picked a bad time to start: I have exams. This means less time to exercise, and more pressure (eat more?)

My aims: To increase exercise (3 runs per week, plus football. Rugby's over for the summer)

To reduce food intake (By 1: Taking less lunch to school. 2. Avoid shopping for snacks 3. Reduce evening meal sizes.

Anyone feel free to post in here, I'll try to keep this diary updated, and answer any questions, or just join in conversation :D

Hi Sam & welcome to the forum. There is a lot of information out there( & in this forum & it's "sister/brother" forum http://www.fitness.com/ as to different ways to lose weight & the myriad of exercises you can do to get fit & trim, but with exams coming up now is probably not the time to spend researching it. Now is a great time to start making small changes though. The best time is when you are ready. I think your aims are good. Eating healthy snacks like fruit or a healthy low-fat sandwich is much better than eating crisps or chocolate bars or deep-fried food. Think of "Nothing tastes as good as slim will feel" when you contemplate eating any junk food. Even if you just did that for a while you will find you drop a little weight. Fitting in a walk/run will help you clear your head for your exams & you can increase that when you have more time. Joining a gym is a great idea too.

Many of us use apps to help us keep track of calories consumed/burned etc & these give you a good insight into the calorific content of different things that we eat. I use My Fitness Pal but it does take time getting used to it & you may not be able to find that at the moment. It also may not be necessary for you once you have a routine set up. There are many apps for tracking your exercise like runkeeper(using GPS to track your routes etc) or couch to 5k (c25k) to build up to a 5km run. You prob already can do that. My Fitness Pal has a long list of exercises & will tell you how many calories each burns. I like the way it helps to make the connection between what I want to eat & what I need to do to enable me to stay within my allotted calories for the day. Check it out after your exams.

Make small changes for now Sam while your time is limited to study. Eat less fatty & high calorie food, more fruit & vegetables & lean meat & try to get some exercise every day, even if it's just a quick run or a brisk, short walk. Small changes make a big difference & the fact that you have decided to make those changes should see them happen. Cheers & all the best, Cate
