Low Carb High Protein Diet

I have read numerous times that the atkins diet can cause you to lose muscle and the weight u lose is mainyl water weight.

Ive got a question though, lots of high protein foods like meats, cheeses, eggs ect. are typically low in carbs. If I were doing weight training while on the atkins diet and drank a lot of water which i typically do wouldnt i be on a perfect routine to lose fat and gain muscle which is my objective?

Thanks in advance, Mike

Protein is a bad source for muscular energy. Without a good source of carbs, when you lift your body will be struggling to liberate enough energy - and the only other two sources of energy it will have are fats (difficult to liberate) and protein (extremely difficult to liberate, requires the breakdown of muscle tissue).

You'll find a lot of the regulars here don't necessarily care for low carb diets. Granted they do have their place, for the most part however a 40 % protein, 40 % carbohydrate, and 20 % fat is generally good for fitness. You may tweak it higher on protein (45/35 or 50/30) for muscle gain, but as Fil said, you need the carbs for workout fuel.

yeah i agree with that. you shouldnt eat too many carbs, but you shouldnt cut them out either. your body needs them badly especially if you're working out. personally, i think the atkins diet is a disgrace, & i suspect it wont be around in the mainstream much longer.

One thing people forget (or never knew) is that Atkins has been around since the 70's - it comes and goes in popularity, depending on how long it takes people to forget it, and how long it takes them to notice that it's bad for you :)

cycle your low carb diet - after a few days of limiting carbs, then have a couple of days of loading carbs

don't do it for too long

you'll regret it !

some where it said that eating a certain number of carbs like 2,000 for 3 days will change your metabolism to burn away 2,000 crabs and then if you work out it will burn the fat tissue? But if you only eat 400 carbs for 3 days you metabolism will only burn 400 crabs that day...is that true?

carb cycling is about tricking your body
after a couple of days of starving your body of carbs, you eat them and your body saps them up into muscle tissue (preparing for the next farce)
then you repeat the process

so then it would work to get muscle? (sorry for being off topic)

the reason why bodybuilders do that for contest prep is because
when theyre cutting (which they do as long as they desire before contest), alot of them eat very low carb and very high protein ... doing this takes water out of the muscle, making it to appear its real size (without as much water).

Then a day or two before the contest they eat tons of carbs, because in that day or two the carbs won't add significant fat with the little amount of time given ... and since one carbohydrate carries three times itself in water ... the carbs rush water into the muscles making them bigger and meaner.

if done right going on a low carb diet to cut bf% can reduce your bf% and maintain most if not all of your current muscle mass contrary to popular belief in this thread. however dont expect to build noticeable amounts of muscle. anyway i as well as many others have experienced this by hooking up with swolecat over at swolecat.com. go check out the before and after pictures if you dont believe me. i dropped 8%bf in 3 months on his plan. i cant go into specifics because of client confidentiality but there is a time and place even on a low carb diet for carbs and you still lose massive bf%. these timed carb feedings are what help you maintain muscle mass. and its not carb cycling.for all you looking to get shredded check it out.
