Lotions, potions, poulitices and presses- What works?

I have recently started on pull ups and evidently done 1 too many for my shoulder.
Feeling rather tender I have applied Voltaren gel to see if it helps.
It occurs to me however to wonder at the efficacy of a topial application of a gell to heal ligaments and muscle, subdermis.
Does anyone know how these things work and what is/isn't effective?
Deep heat has been around for years but what does it do?
 
Ok So initially I thought the gel had helped. But I think I just go warmed up during the day and it just didn't ache as much. But This morning when I woke up it was quite sore again.

I guess my assumption is that gels and lotions etc. have ilttle efficacy.
