Loss of body fat

Hello there,

I have a question about body fat.
2 weeks ago when I joined the gym and went for assessment I was measuring 177lb with 38% of body fat. I am 5'9. I couldnt belive cause just a year and a half ago I was 150lb with 22% body fat. Now I know that pizza cravings throughout my pregnancy could give me 38% of body fat. My baby is 3 months.

A week ago I bough Body Fat Scale and when I checked myself I was 177lbs with 34.5% body fat.
Today when I checked myself, I was 176lb with 33% body fat and 41% water. I measured myself in the morning before the breakfast.

Is it possible to lose 5% of body fat within 2 week (I've been working out hard, cardio and weight training) or the body fat scale in gym could have been wrong. I am not that fat, its just seems impossible to have 38% of body fat.

Thanks everyone.

P.S. And just how long approximately should take me to go back to 22% body fat from now, or rather to lose 10% of body fat.

It is possible to lose that much body fat since you are still losing body fat from being pregnant. The scales could also be wrong. Scales and calipers always have a margin of error.

My best advice is to use one scale (either yours or the gyms) and measure at the same time of day (first thing in the morning after you go to the bathroom) once per week.

Even then the number will rise and fall a bit. So long as the general pattern continues to decrease... you are on the right track.

It is possible (and most Americans are there) to be at a 38% body fat and not realize it. Not saying you are American or really at 38% :) Just that it is possible to not realize it.

How long it will take you to get back to 22%... I don't know. It depends on your fitness routine, eating plan, goals, time spent working out, genetics, etc.

Also, what body fat scale are you using? I have never heard of one that measures how much of you is water.

Lynn,
Thank you for your replay.

The scale I got is Taylor Body Fat Scale #5563

I think I will stick to my scale because couple of years ago in another gym I was told I have 12% body fat. IMPOSSIBLE No way was that true, 22% was true. Sometimes I wonder why do I end up dealing with gym people that dont know much.

Anyway, I am in gym Monday to Friday.
Monday, Wednesday and Friday- weight training (10 minutes worm up, stratching, weight lifting then 30 minutes cardio)
Tuesdays and Thursday- 30-40 minutes cardio depending on machine.
If I am not running around, shopping and the rest of errans on Saturday or Sunday, I do additional 30 minutes cardio in gym.

I took your advice with drinking a lot of water, having enough sleep, eating carbs and protein in every meal and eating every 3 hours.
My biggest problem is counting calories and from what I calculated I eat from 1700-1900 calories per day.

Comparing to my age (26), weight (175lbs) and height(5'9) I should eat 2400 calories per day to maintain my weight, minus 500 to lose the weight.... I think I seem to be alright for now.

Any easy way suggestions to calculate the calories?

Thank you again and if you have any other suggestions, I would really appreciate it.

One other thing to note after checking out your body fat scale... it will be off from handheld devices too. Since your scale measures from the feet... it will have it's own reading.

Sort of like using calipers only in the abdominal area... the number you get is the body fat % in the ab area only. So you have to average the body fat from at least three area with calipers (triceps, abs and thighs are commone areas).

Your scale will do. It gives you an idea of where you are. Your workout plan seems okay from what I can see. I am not sure about your specific details, but overall it looks fine.

I got a little lower reading for your recommended caloric intake. I got that you should 2073 calories to maintain your weight. I like to take away 350 calories and then workout too.

Taking away 350 calories and working out usually results in a 500 calorie deficit each day- or 3500 at the end of 7 days. And 3500 calories equals one pound of fat.

I do not really count calories. I just eat 5-6 times per day. A protein and a carb at each meal. If I am hungry I eat. If I am not hungry... I still eat every 2-3 hours. I found that my body will adapt to healthy eating and calorie counting becomes less of a hassle.

However others are BIG fans of counting calories. I think it all depends on you. Best of luck!
