Losing weight vs alcohol

hi i have been working out 5 days a week and doing very well with eating etc but im wondering just how bad is going out one night at the weekend and drinking all night. I have lost weight but would it be wise to cut out drink completely for a few months will i have more positive results if i do.

I find that i lose weight during the week then kind of ruin it by drinking alcohol on a sat night.

Any advice would be great

There's nothing wrong with having a few beers on a Saturday night. But drinking all night long... well that can be another story. It would be better to skip the alcohol and replace it with water :)

Don't deprive yourself though. If you can afford a few drinks on a Saturday night then go for it. Maybe only drink 2 Saturdays a month or come up with another compromise.

ok thanks i was finding i would lose a couple of lbs then go out drinking say maybe 10 bottles of beer and 6-7 spirits and i would lose weight according to the scales when i come home or get up in the morning.

But the minute i eat something it rockets right up.

I look at the scales about 3 times a day should i realy stop doing that i cant help it. I am down a trouser size but i havent lost weight according to the scales. But i work out every day and eat healthy, i burn about 1300 calories a day and eat no more than 1100.

Your help again would be great

be careful when drinking, especially with some drinks-cocktails & bottles(like archers)-they have massive amounts of calories and binge drinking can lead to drinking 2,000cal in one night! for health keep to straight spirits, wine and maybe low cal beer.

as for the trouser size, well done thats amazing!!! you should avoid the scales as much as poss though as it leads to disapointment. when starting a diet you will lose weight, then build muscle for a while(so you will slim but wont lose scale weight as muscle is heavier) before losing more fat, but slower.

when you say you burn 1300cal a day is that from exercise??or in general? also 1100cal intake is bordering on very low, your metabolism may have slowed down as its in shock.

what do you eat in a day(roughly)and what exercise do you do?

1300 cals burned each day and you only eat 1100? Can you post up stats? Unless you are very small, this is an awfully low amount of cals, and you might even be overtraining ..

Realy thats all im eating at the moment ill have the occasionaly curry on a sunday frm take away.

Can you give me any help on what i should be doing.

Thanks guys

Sounds like you need a complete overhaul here. Here are some things I noticed/would like to suggest:

- That's a lot of alcohol for one night.

- Your caloric intake is too low.

- You make no mention of strength training.

- Are you doing the swimming and afternoon cardio daily? If so, it's too much and as niceone mentioned... could be considered over training.

- You said when you eat you gain weight. That's a sign of a negative daily menu. Your body may be holding onto fat. Not sure.

Here are some tips to get started on a well-rounded fitness and eating plan. You can lose the additional body fat :)

1) Eat 5-6 small meals throughout the day. Each meal should be 2-3 hours apart. Each meal should contain one protein and one carb. The first meal should be eaten within an hour after waking.

2) Drink a cup of water at each meal.

3) Rest properly. This means taking at least 48 hours between strength training the same muscles, and it also means getting at least 7-8 hours of sleep per night. Lastly, it means taking 1-2 days off from exercising per week.

4) Cardio. This should be done at different intensity levels and different session lengths. Consider doing a low intensity/long session, a high intensity/short session and a few medium intensity/medium length sessions.

5) Strength Training. Strength train each muscle 1-3 times per week. You should lift a proper weight and perform the proper amount of sets/reps for your strength training method. If you need more guidance or exercise ideas you can head over

All of the above things combined will result in fat loss.

If you're gaining weight when you eat, I would probably suggest that you're generally undernourished and starving. When we starve or don't get enough calories, we lose fluid and our bodies slow down our metbolisms to try to hold onto some weight and stop us dying, then the minute we eat again, not only does our body try to hold onto that for as long as it can, because our metabolisms are alreday slower than they healthily might be, it can't digest the food as well, particularly in light of the fluid loss ..hydration being essential for healthy digestion and metabolism, so the reult s you gain back any loss you made and some!..

1300 cals a day is definately too little! .. I'm an active 45kg ish give or take fml and I'm only 169 cm.. even I, at a really lean intake would never go under 1500.. and thats living mainly on eggwhites and fruit and veg and protein shakes, juices, milk and so forth.

The other thing about alcohol and loosing weight, is that A. alcohol dehydrates - effecting your metabolism as described above and for the fact your body cannot sufficiently eliminate waste or digest properly .. the other is that all alcohol is seriously loaded with massive amouts of refined sugar... except for dry red wine which has marginally less and other benifits toward your health.
Sugar itself will slow down your metabolism and sets the enviornment for comprimsed immunity and disease reception and toxicity and when you eat grains with sugar .. a simple sugar.. that sugarinhibits the grain fromdigesting properly and causes you to gain weight.
When you mix a complex carborhydrate with a simple sugar, ..it turns into extra tissue or fat should the person not be exercising, much much faster than almost any other combination of food.

If you are trying to loose weight, alcohol will not only not help you, but as you've already noticed, wil also ruin any work you've done and need extra work juust to get back to where you were before your drink session.

If you're seious about wanting to loose weight, I recommend more smaller meals andd fluids more often, and you dOnt drink until you reach your goals.. thenif you lke, you can drink again later and ruin all the work you've done.
Alcohol in general is not something lean and strong healthy people do.. it 's that simple.
If you must drink, I highly recomend saving it until your metabolism can better cope.

Good luck creating your lifestyle choices and becoming the picture of hte person you'd like to be. ..you hsave the information and now all youneed is the will and desire enough to do it.

your body needs calories to basically survive. the av male needs 2000calories just to go about his daily business(maybe more or less depending on height, weight, muscles) . therefore eating 1500calories should be for basic living(sleeping in itself burns 110cals and hour). with the exercise id say eat half of what you burn off so if you do a 500cal workout then eat 250cals extra that day(on top of the 1500).

however its also improtant to eat the right stuff. after a long cardio workout you should eat something with carbs within 30mins to efectively replenish glycogen stores(so you have replaced the energy used) after weights have a protein shake or something high in protein.

make sure you get enough water!!this is important for weight loss as it flushes everything out. also with the sauna and exercise you need to drink lots more - get the water from herbal teas too or lemon water.

as for food, mix it up a bit. add a slice of whole meal bread to the soup. wheatabix is good(add some fruit sometimes like blueberries or a soya yoghurt instead of milk)

if you have more questions, please post them! i hope this helps sorry its so long!
