Losing My Gut

Hey gang. I have looked and I have read on here, but I can't seem to get a clear method for losing my gut. I'm 6' 175, and all of my fat (that I am concerned with at least) is in my gut. I run 1.5-2 miles about 3 times a week. Also, crunches and push-ups on those days as well. I have some free weights which I am using to increase muscle, but the gut is staying where it is (so it seems). What can I add to my routine to get rid of the gut? I want to lose 2-3 inches in a month or two (or as soon as possible in a healthy fashion).

Thanks

Same problem as with many newbies.
Your not giving us enough info.

How offen do you train and for how long
what exactly do you do when you train (very specific)
what exactly do you eat. (very specific)

With out this info all we can say is exersise and eat properly, but you know that already.

Well, see, that's the thing. I'm just starting out and am looking for some direction. I have two goals: 1) lost my gut, only 2 inches or so, and 2) build muscle mostly in my arms and chest. I am new at this and that's why I'm here - for a little help. I could eat better, but it's difficult. Being in the military, I eat at the chow hall so I only have so much choice in my food intake. I try not to snack all that much, and have been watching what I do eat. I run 2 or 3 times a week for 1.5-2 miles each with my unit, along with pushups (50) and crunches (50). I also have whey protein which I drink (about 40g) after lifting with my free weights and bi/tri bar.

I know I have to exercise and eat properly. I guess what I am asking is what kind of exercises should I do to reach my goals in two or three months? Or even shorter if possible.

well from the little info sounds like you have enough cardio but just need to eat right ... read anywere on these forums they will say abs are made in the kitchen so yeah !!!

your not gonna loose any weight if you wanna build muscle.

You can do both at the same time but it very very slow. You gotta choose one or the other.
if you do more arobic exersise you'll loose weight and you'll loose muscle.
if you wanna build muscle then you gotta eat lots of carbs and protien so you'll gain a little fat. However if you consentrate on building muscle then you'll have a much faster metabolism. Therefore you'll loose fat anyway.

1, What equipment do you have access to?
2, How much time and how many times a week are you prepaired to train?
3, have you lifted weights before?
4, How much sleep will you get?
5, what snack type foods are you eating?
6, do you wanna build lots of mass and strenght or cut cut and look lean?
7, do you drink alchol? how much?
8, is you protien shake hi or low carb? (less than 4g carbs per serving or more like 50g)

:D That makes sense. I am not trying to "lose weight" per se, just trying to redue my gut to get my abs out haha. As far as the weights, I am focusing on my arms because everything else is to my liking - I'm tall and skinny, so I just want to have a little more definition.

I have adjustable free weights (dumbells, bi/tri bar). We have a very nice gym here, but it's hard for me to get to due to my schedule (full time shift worker, plus full time school), so I want to get something going that I can do at home in my spare time. I can put aside an hour at a time outside of work, and can do that up to 5 times a week I'd say. I'm pretty flexible as far as that goes. I have lifted weights before, but nothing serious. I tend to get between 6 and 10 hours of sleep, but more times than not it's in the 8-hour range.

Snack foods? Not really eating much of them, if any at all. Sometimes a cookie or crackers/chips now and then, but that might be one or two times a week and in moderate portions. I virtually cut out all fast food and might go to McDonalds once every two or three weeks. I generally eat two meals a day due to my schedule with a smaller "meal/snack" at some point.

I want cut and lean, but increase the arms - those are my focus for the muscle building. I don't drink. If I do, it's once a month, if that. And the protien shake is 4g net carbs.

I imagine I have to do more crunches. The runnning is getting hard due to the weather and the cold (high altitude + exercise induced acute asthma prevent me from going "all-out" in the running). How would something like a bike work out for the gut reduction?

Thanks for your help and time. So... what do you think? :D

The bike is really good for ab work not only is it good cardio it also uses your core (especially lower abs) when you peddle.
