Hi all

sorry if this is in the wrong section.

I started my diet and exercise regime nearly 4 weeks ago - i am a member of a gym and got an exercise programme done up by one of the trainers there. I started my doing half an hour on cross trainer- then 15 mins on bike- then arm toning and 15 mins on tredmill.

however this week on the last 2 days , i couldnt do the half an hour on the cross trainer, my body ached and i was getting tired very easilly. i am pretty disappointed, i was fine on everything else but the second i tried to go back on the cross trainer the aching and fatigue came in.

Can anyone give me any idea what it could have been?

Maybes you didn't eat enough that day or it could be you have not had enough rest. Do you have rest days on your programme?

i work out monday to friday and take a break at the weekends. I was just after getting over the flu the day before would that have been an issue?

Sometimes I wonder too. I keep a good mental note on how far I can run and on what settings in 60 minutes. Sometimes I'm 1/2 mile down on the previous attempt. Don't know why.

tilly, it sounds like you were probably not over the flu but other problems could be not having enough carbs in your diet before you exercise or after exercise on the previous day, not having a rest day mid week could also be a problem as you are having your two rest days together. You don't say if your weight lifting exercises are the same every day ? if they are then you have a problem there as well.

ive only been doin the weights the last week - i do the shoulder press for two 15 reps. thats all i do. im on 3kg to start for toning my arms and im still on that. I normally exercise 1st thing in the morning as its the only time i can do it. I have a bowl of porrige on gym days in the morning for energy.

Yeah but, especially when starting out, you should probably not be doing weights for more than 2 or 3 days a week. At least not hitting the same muscles more than that. There is no real benefit beyond energy used, and you're risking overstimulating your super-untrained CNS which'll just end up slowing your progress down. Also if you're just starting out then getting flu-like symptoms from the shock of your body actually being worked out, is pretty common.

I'd say, like others have suggested, make sure your diet is in order, and back down from the exercise for a few days to let your body get some rest. Make sure you get some carbs onboard and protein too during those days to facilitate the refilling of your glucose depots and rebuilding any worn muscle.
