Lose weight without burning muscle

I want to lose weight and get more tone but without losing muscle. I try to run on the weekends when I don't have work but I was wondering if there was also some alternatives to losing weight besides running? I heard that when you weight lift you burn fat but for me I just get wide musclar and fat all mixed in if I just weight lift alone. Isn't there any exercises I could do that will help me burn fat when I don't have time to run? Like some Calisthenics or something that has helped you guys in the past?
