loose or gain?

hi,
im 19 and of an average build. i basically want to sort out my fitness and see more definition. i started off with the myth that i should loose some weight first by eating more healthy and working out etc etc. and then start to gain weight again, but while doing that turn it into muscle..
however, i was talking to a mate of mine (who was in my position about 2 years ago and is now built like a tank) and he suggested that i eat up to 6 meals a day and put loads of weight on and then burn it off by weight lifting etc instead of running and using skiing machines etc? he also said that 'protein drinks' are great for that as well (should mean i dont need like 6 meals everyday apparently?!)..
i guess im just after some opinions or more ideas.. im kinda stuck in between both ideas at the moment and it doesn't seem to be doing me any good...
any help at all would be very apprieciated..

id say it depends on what you want more ...
do u want to get big or toned first?
if u lose weight first and get tone then get bigger ... u would see the results quicker w/ more definition because the fat wont be there.
u can get big now without losing weight... eating alot ... but u wont be lookn like those ppl u see who are ripped because u will still have to tone urself more and make sure ur low bodyfat.

personally ... id like to be toned first ... lose the bodyfat .... then build up from there ... even tho u can lose weight while weightlifting ... u can do it much faster from making it your first priority.
u should eat 6 meals a day so ur metabolism stays reved up high thruout the day ... control your calorie intake to whatevr you limit is ... weather u wana gain or lose.
 
if you have some excess fat to lose, my opinion would be to take care of that first before trying to add more weight.

i dont care for the idea of putting "loads of weight on". if you want to gain weight, it should be done slowly and a little at at time.
 
ok thanx guys, i thought that might be the case... i havn't got ALLOT of weight to loose but i guess i could just do with some toning.
- reckon i should calorie control it for abit and get on the skiing machine more often? or do more 'weights' type of exercise (instead of running/skiing machine)?
