Looking to Get Back

Hey everyone,

Former hockey player, quit this season and really got out of shape. I really would like to get back in shape and I've set my goal to be in shape for the summer, but I really have no idea on how to set up a work out regimine or a diet. I really haven't done much since dropping hockey and, like I said, have lost my way. Gained about 15 pounds, up to 180. Not good.

Thanks in advance for any help!

When you say that you want to get back in shape, what exactly are your goals with that? Just fat loss? Building muscle mass?

There are a few sticky threads in different forum sections that can get you started on good training programs, but without knowing your goals, I'm not sure exactly where to point you. That being said, here are a couple of good ones:

And a good article on nutrition basics:

Hope that helps a bit!

My main goal is fat loss, while preserving what muscle mass I have. After I lose enough fat, I'd like to start strength training, but I really have no idea as to how to go about that. I don't know much about designing a routine due to the limited resources I have available.

My goal is to lose fifteen pounds of fat by June 1st. I don't know if that's reasonable, but I'm adamant about doing it. As I said before, I'd like to preserve what muscle mass I have now and build upon that later on down the road, but what I want to do first is tackle my main goal; and that's losing this fat I've picked up.

Thanks for the links and such, I'll read through them, but any tips or help in creating a routine are welcome.

How old are you? What kind of training did you do when you played hockey? Do you have a place to train? What's your diet?

I'm 16 years old, 180 lbs 5'11". When I played, I didn't have any particular training schedule. I'd bench with my father in the basement and do some cardio (for stamina on the ice) but that's about it. Hockey was year round, I stayed in shape throughout the year regardless. Having not stepped foot on the ice since July, and that was just to skate for a half hour or so, I haven't seen much activity in ANYTHING really and simply feel lethargic.

I have no reliable place to train. I live fifteen minutes from the closest town with a gym and simply have no way of getting to and fro each day. I also lack the money to purchase a membership.

My diet is poor. I have really been trying to cut down in the past few weeks (quit drinking soda, began eating fruits and veggies, no fast food, etc) but I haven't even sat down and thought out a nutritional plan yet.

As I said, I'm new to all of this. I hate saying it, but I have no idea what I'm doing or what approach to take. I know I'm motivated enough. I need to get back in shape, I want to look good and feel good, but I simply don't know how to plan this out.

I appreciate the responses though. Shows you guys are willing to help. :)

Looking at your goals, the first two links that I put up for you should be the most appropriate for you and there is an example program in there as well. There is also some info on nutrition. The third link is a training program for young athletes, so with you being only 16, this might be a really good program for you to start on. The last link is a lot of nutritional information and is a great way to understand how to eat according to your goals - just on a basic level, not for high level training.

Sorry, I know you're probably in school, but you'll have to do some reading :)
