Looking for the right mix of diet and training

Hello all,

I'm in search of the right mix of healthy eating and the right training to firstly help me lose some weight, and then add some muscle and definition to my body.

I'm 6'1 and weight roughly 215 lbs.

The majority of fat on my body is around my stomach. My main aim is to lose my 'belly' first and then get serious with adding some muscle and definition to my entire body.

I have an Orbitrek at home which I plan to start using, and I also play soccer once a week. I'm also planning on starting a gym with a friend within the next 2 weeks.

I'd just like to know if I have the right approach thus far, and what pointers you all may have that will help me out. I'm not looking to get totally ripped or anything, I just want to lose my belly and put on some muscle so that I can have a decent look.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

you have a great approach so far.
you have your goals in set and are ready to go for them.

for losing the fat you must diet ... a must. if your going to be weightlifting also ... make sure u have a diet with alot of protein. just be sure to eat healthy things ... no more chips, chocolate bars, sugar drinks ect .... eat things like tuna, chicken, eggs, cottage cheese, brown rice, potatoes ect.
learn about the three main things for dieting ... protein, carbohydrates and fats. search the net as much as you can to learn about these. but your diet will allow u to shed the lbs .... and if u exercise you will lose much faster. so go running, swimming, biking every second day ... and make sure u go at a pace thats fast enuf for it to work you out ... but not so fast that u hate doing it.

weightlifting is a great choice ... not only will it get you muscle .. but it helps significantly in losing fat also... eat alot of protein when you work out... and dont work the same muscles consecutivly day after day... do certain exercises on certain days .. like monday : bak/bicep/stomach wed: chest/tri fri: shoulders/stomach and legs on sat or sun by themselves.
i cant tell u everything .. so if u wana know specific things .. just post them on this site and i will try my best to answer ... along with many other ppl .. .there are some good trainers who use this site who really know their stuff.

theres more to all of this then i mentioned ... i just dont haev enuf room and giving it to u all at once will be too much. just learn as much as u can.

Thanks very much for the quick replies!

Now that I have a good idea where to pick up i'll do so very soon.

I dont have a diet in place just yet.

I'm under some stress for the next 2 weeks doing some exams and was really hoping to join the gym sooner. But I put things off until I have more spare time.

All I can say about my current diet is that it's bad...

For some reason I just cant eat a meal until at least 10am or later, and when i'm out alot I usually resort to fast food which I know is bad. I try not to snack too much and i'm trying to get my water intake up to the 8 glasses per day recommendation.

I guess i'm going to have to make some big changes, but i'd be willing to do it once I can see real results.

its completly worth it ...
you do it for a few weeks then u start seeing the results and you wont regret all the things u had to sacrifice .. because its all worth it. its a great feeling ... good luck with your training.

making little changes here and there will help out. if you eat fast food, choose at least decent choices. maybe pick up a cheap multi-vitamin at the store. drink more water, etc

Does anyone have any recommendations for any suppliments I should look into?

I hear alot of talk about protein shakes, etc.

I also see some people taking like 10 tablets before going to the gym... is all that important at this time?

Thanks.

Protien shakes can help...i find creatine very helpful too. Diets are wierd for me...I used to be overweight but I cant help but notice that I gain the most muscle when Im eating icecream or chocolate candy bars, and that I stabilize when Im on a restricted carb diet...I guess your body works the best when you eat everything in moderation but intake enough calories for your body to signal the start of muscle building
