Hey guys!

About me: I'm a 23-year-old girl and I'm finishing my masters this year. I have a boyfriend, almost 7 years and going strong. I'm 158cm and about 68kg.

Like any other woman, i wanna feel good about my body and my health, wich is harder than it seems. I've decided that, in order to become heathier (not only physicaly but also mentally) I need to reach a weight level that is considered healthy for my height instead of overweight, and that is about 58kg.
I've been on a diet last year in wich i managed to lose about 5kg (from 71kg to 66kg) but since then i've gained about 2/3kg... I've also found a diet that i can work with and that works for me, now i just need some motivation!

This has been a very big problem... I can't seem to keep being motivated! I diet and exercise for a week and then i succumb to the wonders of fast food and netflix on the couch. As I am writting my master thesis this semester and don't have classes, i dont exactly have a routine and it is becoming part of my motivatio problem!
Also, my brother, my mother and my boyfriend all have super fast metabolisms that allow them to eat whatever they want without putting on any weight, so it is hard for me to eat my soup and watch my brother eat french fries... Also, I think I may be addicted to mcDonald's, any way around that? I know it is definitely my worst habit and the worse one to my health.

I wanna hear your opinions, please, so i dont feel so alone in this weight loss period.

Hi, Roxy & welcome to the forum. I think your best bet would be to change your focus from the idea of losing weight to becoming healthy. It should not be an all or nothing thing as that makes you feel deprived. Google McDonald's addiction & look up what's in their food. I just did. The mind is a very powerful thing. If you can imagine McD as being poisonous that will help :)
You don't have much to lose hon, so making small changes every day will make a difference. Just going for a walk, taking the stairs, rather than the lift, eating more fruit & veg, less junk food........will make such a difference.
Ultimately it's you who has to make the changes, but we can be your cheer squad. You can do this! You are at a great age to set yourself up for a healthy life! Cheers, Cate.

Hey Roxy and another welcome! Small changes for the long term really are the best way to go, as shown by the fact that less than 10% of people on restrictive diets manage to both lose the weight and keep it off.
I feel you on the lack of structure, by the way, and I think it's one of the reasons many of us have trouble sticking to their plans during the weekend. Do you enjoy exercising? If not: you may want to find a way to move which IS fun for long-term motivation.

Hey!! Thank you so much for your support and opinions! You have no ideia what they mean to me! :) I know i don't need to lose a loooooot of weight but i have noticed that only small changes dont do it for me, meaning: they work if i wanna maintain the same weight, but not if i wanna lose some. Today i started a plan, same one as last year, that is 31 days long, very restrictive on the first 2 weeks, and then i'll add some things week by week (3rd week i'll introduce fruit and soup, and 4th week some brown rice and some pasta). It is a no carb diet, for this 2 weeks, and no fruit because of the sugar in it. I've noticed that this diet gets me results and in the past I've learned to do some healthy changes that i still do! If i could keep all the changes that i've learned i would be able to be in my goal weight "forever" :O the problem is, when i'm stressed or bored i end up eating a lot of non healthy foods, specially as snacks... like today i would eat an yogurt in the afternoon, but if i'm stressed/bored/sad i would eat a chocolate (or 3).

Regarding exercise, this is one of the things i need motivation to do. I usually went to the gym with my boyfriend and so i would be motivated to go, but in november he hurt his arm and he still can't go to the gym. I go alone whenever i want/have time to go but it's harder going alone! I once read that if you tell your friends and family that you are on a diet or plan to exercise more or have a goal of any type, you are more likely to achieve said goal. So today when i went to the gym, alone just for a run, i posted a pic online (millenials work like this) and i fully intend to keep posting a pic a day until the end of my 31 days.

Once again, your support is very important for me, so i'll keep posting here, with new weightings every week, and i'll see what i can lose in 31 days!

Thank you so much!

I'm generally opposed to crash dieting but as long as you're healthy, it's for a short amount of time and you know how you'll maintain afterwards I guess you're good to go. Good trick with the gym selfie :D Is there any other kind of exercise you might actually enjoy? Life is short, might as well try to combine useful and fun! Swimming, dance classes, martial arts, rock climbing... Maybe ask uncle Google what's available around where you live and use the time your bf can't work out to try new things. Hope his arm is healing well :)

His arm is doing fine, it just going to be a few more months without him in the gym... I'm really considering some swimming classes/water aerobics my gym offers, i just need to get off my butt and go do it! And, by the way, i dont really enjoy running, it's just that the classes in my gym are either to slow or too fast for my pace and i really suck at dancing, so it's running and weight lifting/core exercises for me. But i'm really hoping to like the swimming lessons! I hope to try them this week and let you all know how it went!

Hey Roxy!

Just as a heads up, if you hate an exercise, definitely find something else - it's almost impossible to keep up with it if you absolutely detest it so the calorie burn/weight loss will work for now...but what about in 3-4 years? Try the swimming!! I personally love running so it's my go-to exercise but if you hate it, you hate it.

Also, just because your fam has a high metabolism doesn't mean damage isn't being done. Not saying that to scare you (or them) but high sugar, salt, fat, additives, dyes, processed junk...it catches up with people. It might not be weight-related but it's addictive, expensive and can cause major damage to your heart, liver, and even visceral fat (the fat that surrounds your organs). It's not pretty! Hopefully they eat mostly healthy but definitely research what that stuff does to your body and for me, it turned me off completely (Thankfully, I don't like most of the fast food places anyways so it was easy enough lol).

I would love to hate fast food... however if it wasnt so unhealthy i would eat it even more! Regarding health, the people i refered to are indeed healthy (they do anually check ups and so) but of course i understand that being healthy in your 20's doesnt meant it is going to last. It is one of the reasons i decided to go on a diet (and hopefully learn and keep some healthy habits).

I've had a bit of a problem sticking to my diet... Yesterday my mom decided she didn't feel like cooking so we ordered take out (it was roast chicken) wich wouldnt have made much damage if i hadn't eaten the fries that came with it... Today i couldn't resist a cookie, with egg cream in the middle and half dipped in chocolate... but it was only one and it was small. But this is what i mean about motivation, i'm 3 days into my diet and i already succumbed twice! And tomorrow i'm going with some friends to the café in the afternoon to eat something, so there goes mistake number 3...

On the other side, today i tried a zumba class at my gym and i really liked it!! I suck at it, because i have 2 left feet and no notion of rythm whatsoever... but i laughed a lot and the instructor was pretty cool! Tomorrow i will finally try the water aerobisc class and i'm really excited!

Thank you for all your support!

It doesn´t have to, you know. You could look their menu up online and find out the healthiest option. Or have a salad before going and just eat an entree. Which is also a possibility when your family eats something unhealthy: have a small portion and make yourself a salad to go with it.
Glad to hear you had fun moving!

Sooo, i couldnt resis and hate half a toast with butter and jam and a hot chocolate. It was so cold and rainy outside, it was really comforting to drink that hot chocolate :p But, i got to try the water aerobisc today and it was really fun!! If i can stick to it and zumba, i'm working out 3 times a week, wich is good in my opinion. Besides the toast and hot chocolate, i've been making heathy choices, and when monday comes around let's see if this diet is working.

I like the salad idea, i usually do it with soup because it's cold here and i rather eat something that's hot. But it's challenging, i'd much rather eat the godamn fries or whatever :p

Working out a few times a week is good, but you'll find it's what you eat that counts the most. Start making small changes & work your way up Roxy. Old habits can be replaced with new better ones. Exercising more should help you want to eat healthier. You can do this :)

Homemade soup is the only soup :) Nothing else comes close & it's very easy to make.

I couldn't agree more! It is so easy to make and way healthier than store bought options! That's one good thing about my eating habits, almost everything we eat at home is homemade, even pizza and lasagna and cakes!

Soo this week i managed to lose 0,7kg, going from 69.4kg to 68.7kg. Not bad, but i would like to do better in the weeks to come, or it will take a reeeeeally long time to lose the 10kg
