Lol, it's been used on the Simpsons before, someone from U2 called Monty Burns a wanker on a plane journey. US shows sometimes use it as it's a swear work that gets passed your sensors, I've heard it in a few US shows now.
 
That word is Australian not British. I believe the US equivalent is "Jerk".

Who can be bothered to keep them straight? They are both populations that represent a very small percentage of the world's English speakers.
