less weight more muscle

So about 3-4 months ago I lessened my weight and upped my reps + total period in the gym. Frankly, I am seeing better results from a body fit perspective. However, I have lessened my power. For example, I am nowbenching about 10 - 20 lbs less on my max now. The counter-side of this is a very defined ripped body. I work out for general well being and also because I spend every moment I can on the water and in a bathing suit. Yes I admit it, I am a little vain.

Does anyone have a good reason why I should not continue to sacrifice a little power for the v-shaped torso and muscle definition i get from lifting less weight more often? Is there a long term negative effect?

Should I consider a cycle such as 3 weeks less weight 1 week maxing out?

I have been working out for about 7 years so I am not a nube. With all due respect.... If you dont know what your talking about or if you have less experience, please dont give me any advice.

I've never heard of negative side effects from what you are describing.

What you should do depends entirely on your goals. You stated that muscle definition is important, so dropping the weights and upping the reps, as that's had a positive impact in that regard, seems like the way to go.

However, if you are concerned about losing strength, I'd say that cycling set/rep schemes could be the way to go. The only way to know for sure is to give it a try.

There's nothing wrong with keeping a high rep workout if that's what you want out of your body. Although, I do have to say that I think you are getting such good progress out of it because you seem to have drastically altered your workout. Change sparks results...simple as that. If you are just looking for the beach body (which many people are), but are still looking for strength gains, I'd switch to a low rep/high weight program for a couple months. You can easily do that while still be shredded. If you aren't worried about your strength gains, then I'd say F-it and keep with what you are doing now. It's about your personal goals and being happy with your results.

Personally, I say congrats for getting the body that you want.

Lowering your weight and up'ing your reps is the best for developing muscular endurance. But if you continue doing hi rep sets after some time of lifting you'll prevent muscle growth in my oppinion.

I'm actually in the same boat. I've been lifting for 6-7 years now (3 sets of 12-15 moderate weight) and just recently got advice from several people on here and at my gym to switch it up for a muscle building program. So now I'm doing 3 days of weights (heavy day, moderate day and light day) the set and rep range are completely different on each day. So far I like it and am seeing results.
