Less of a heavier weight Vs. More of a lighter weight

I need some advice with this.

I have recently (about a month ago) got back into the gym doing weights. Recently I have been unsure whether I should do more of lighter weights or less of heavier weights.

So what do you guy's think? What is more likely to show the quickest and have the most effect results:
- Doing more of a lighter weight in one session
OR
- Doing less but of a heavier weight in a session

I'm unsure as to which is likely to be the most effective and show the best results. At the moment I am doing a lot with a lighter weight with not too much trouble. Would it be better for me to switch to a heavier weight to be more effective, even if it means doing less sets or better to do more of the lgihter weight? Keep in mind I am pretty much a beginnier (one month of doing weights) and want the best results possible.

Thanks.

how long have you been lifting chrisdud3?? like are you a noob to the activity or you've been doing it for a little while?

Remember, change is always good. I don't know what your training schedule looks like, but you could try heavy weight, high sets, low reps for you core (bench, squats, deads...etc) exercises and moderate weight, low(er) sets, higher reps.

well if you're going to do heavy weight for low reps, i would recomend isolating support muscles.. like the rotator cup, wrists, & lower back before any extremely heavy weight is done.. just a suggestion from someone who wishes he knew that before.. :\

If you're a beginner then you should do high rep 8-12 sets for the first three months to learn the proper technique and strengthen your joints and tendons. If you go heavy too soon you could be setting yourself up for injuries.

I'm not sure what your definitions of low and high reps are. Everyone reacts a little differently, but my own experience is that moderate reps in the 8-12 range are better than lower or higher reps regarding muscle stimulation, pump and reduced injury risk. Couple that with rests of no longer than a minute between each set.
