So I have I don't really have many vices. I don't smoke, I drink about once a week, I don't eat sweets or junk anymore. I can't think of anything that I could do to improve myself...except one thing. Porn. Or is it even that unhealthy? It's not like I sit home 24 hours a day watching it or anything.

So is it a good thing to give up?

What is everyone else doing?

yo dont necessarily have to give something up -

you can make a commitment to do something instead... volunteer your time, visit with people you wouldn't ordinarily visit...

Haha that is kind of funny (no offense meant) but if you think it would be a good idea to give up then possibly it would work haha. Im not Catholic but sometimes I just like to see if I could try and give up certain things. If I were itd be drinking, or biting my nails, or gossiping, or spending so much time on the computer...

Your situation reminds me of 40 days 40 nights with Josh Hartnett when he gives up sex for lent and ulitmately goes insane, anyone seen that movie??

I was having a difficult time with this also...

In previous years I've given up:
pop [soda]
sweets
eating after I came home from the bar [it nearly killed me watching my roommates eat at 2 am--so I just went directly to bed]
eating after 8 o'clock
pizza [because if I have a cheat meal, it's surely pizza]
eating out

So I'm down to either giving up pizza or beer. My one cheat meal a week is two slices of pizza [white pizza or just with cheese]. I maybe have two beers per week, if I have any at all...Yuengling, of course, not light beer. I haven't had either, so I guess it'll be whether I want the beer while I'm out watching the Pens game tomorrow or if I want my cheat meal. We'll see.

Ha, so I'd have to say that porn would be a good thing to give up. I'm actually having the same problem this year; with giving up something, not the porn :)

In the past I've given up soda, swearing, gum, ice, and once spending any change which I kept in a jar then donated to a shelter. I think it came out to almost $100.

I think this year I'll go to stations of the cross on Fridays. I've been before, it's kinda nice.

I have loathes of vices.

  • Heavy smoker :sifone:
  • Go to bed late
  • Get up too late
  • Dont drink enough water
  • Dont eat enough fruit
  • Shop too much
  • Spend too much
  • Save too little
Main one obviously is giving up smoking was going to give up for lent but I dont feel ready yet. Afraid I will eat like a pig so I will wait till I reach this goal first and then giving up smoking will be new goal. Maybe it will be new year resolution for 2010.

There's nothing wrong with watching porn, as long as you don't do it excessively. It irritates me how puritanical our society can be in the U.S. Sexuality is a healthy part of life, it isn't dirty. Granted, I'm not Christian so I suppose that's part of why I feel that way. I also don't practice lent because of that, so I don't bother giving anything up this time of year.

Give up ignorance. Educate yourself! Read more. You could get through a few books easily in that time. I recommend the God Delusion by Richard Dawkins. Of course, after Lent you won't be able to magically take away the knowledge you have gained, but I think thats what Lent is all about: improving yourself.

Actually its not, but it could be for you.

This was a great post...for me to poop on.

I wholeheartedly encourage you to give up porn. And there is no better time than the present!

Good luck, great to be acquainted with other folks interested in improving their quality of life.

Because giving up things that you in no way need and will go back to doing in 41 days will somehow improve you, were as educating yourself would not? Please explain. Imagine all you could read in that time. Hell, if you applied yourself you could learn a programming language or learn basic fundementals of a foreign language.

I believe the point is to give up something in the hope that you will never go back to it again.

I will never be omniscient.

Lent is a time for taking "spiritual inventory" and then cleaning out those things which hinder our personal relationship with Jesus Christ and our service to him.

Does porn hinder your personal relationship with Jesus Christ? :D hehe.

It's believed that by giving certain things up, the person is suppose to learn to control a particular part of his or her life, which leads to greater self-discipline, even when Lent is over.

It all depends on you pal!

I know this might take this a little off topic (maybe), but I think I have a different outlook on sex than everybody else. Is it natural? Eh, to a certain degree. But, just because it's natural doesn't mean that we should be so open and free with it (as a society). Pooping is natural, but if I took a dump on your dining room table, I'm willing to bet that you wouldn't be ok with it, even though it's a completely natural thing to do.

Food for thought...
