Leg Press Question?

What is the average weight a male can Leg Press, I only ask because this seems to be one exercise where I keep moving to higher weights. I weigh 250 lbs and guess that my legs are use to supporting a heavy load. I started back weight training about 3 weeks ago, and my leg press went like this....

Week 1 = 200lbs
Week 2 = 300lbs
Week 3 = 340lbs

Now this week I will probably be doing the following sets

12 reps of 340
10 reps of 380
8 reps of 400

I think the machine only goes up to 400lbs, which at that point I will probably move to trying to up the reps to the 20-30 range. But after that I will have to move to the Leg Press Sled and use free weights. I think I could probably get that machine to use 450-500lbs, I cant image it takes more then six 45lb plates on each side.

Is this just my best muscle? I remember back when I was weight training 9 years ago, that my arms used to go from 20lb concentration curls to 55lb curls in just a few weeks.....don't seem to have that luck this time....only up to the 30lb range at this point.

I feel as though the Leg Presses get my heart rate jumping, by the time I finish my 3 sets, I have downed half of the liter of water I bring to the gym.

Leg press is hard to compare to other people as the design of different machines can make a difference. if you are able you should try to swap to doing squats to work a greater range of muscles. Don't just concentrate on legs, you should have a balanced workout.

as a 183 lb female i leg press 640 kg/1410 lb (including 40 kg sled)

I'm 270, and I maxed out the cable weight press machine the first time I used it. I think it goes to 390. I really recommend the sled type machine if you can do more then that. The one u lay down and push up at a horizontal angle.

Also are you sure you are doing it right? You need a full range of motion, your knees should be near to touching your chest if you are doing it right. If you do it that way, you are going to work a lot more muscles.

I have a big tummy, my legs are not to my chest....but stop at my stomach.....any further and I wouldn't be able to breathe properly.

But yeah I will move to the sled next, I will try out the Squat sled also......but regular squats I will be avoiding like the plague.....as I come from a family with tons of herniated disks

Lol, I am not a bodybuilder so there is no way I could be called buff (i am carrying to much fat) but i am a competitive powerlifter. My squat maxes out at 135 kg (comp legal) and 150 at parallel. but leg press isn't such a good guide for squat strength eg. my core strength limits how much i can squat so needs more work :)

I throw five 45lb plates on each side and do it 30 times in a row. I havn't squated since I stopped playing football, but m highest was 505lbs, but I was also 115lbs heavier at that time.
