Learning to Meditate?

I've been reading the threads throughout regarding meditation and it sounds like something I would really like to try out, it seems to have a lot of benefits. But I'm having a difficult time finding good things to try as a beginner, that I can fully understand. There are so many "Find your inner soul" and "Let your inner self be at one with the universe" and all types of things out there, but I have absolutely NO clue how that is supposed to be accomplished, as a beginner. Now if I were living in Tibet for 15yrs, I'm sure I'd have a grasp, but as it is, I live in the city! :)

So with that, does anyone happen to know of any good things that I can start trying as a beginner, at home in my bedroom or on my bed, or on a couch or something? Or does anyone happen to know of any good sites that might offer free advice such as this? Right now I'm just not in the financial position to go out and purchase a bunch of books and dvd/cd's that may not give me the information I'm really looking for!

Thanks for the help. :)

I don't have the focus for meditation anymore, but one of the better resources I've found for it - to teach you how to meditation is a book/cd from Mark Thornton -

Meditation in a New York Minute... it's quite interesting...

Your mission is to stop thinking." Mark Thornton

for the more frugal - I can't testify to how good it is -but if you google Podcast and meditation you'll find a bunch of different free podcasts that you can download to your computer or MP3 player

is one..

I highly recommend "Turning the Mind into an Ally" by the Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche.

Highly. Can you not get it from the library? I can't really help you with free resources, but a simple Google search should be able to. Essentially, you want to find a comfortable, quiet place to sit at in a relaxed good posture and attempt to clear your mind of *all* thought or distraction. I really recommend a good guide, though, because this can be a scary process without instruction.

Have fun. :D

tibet is one of the largest cities in th world. hehehehe

i find the most meditative times to be when I have worked my body to the point of my eyes glazing over, my brain finally shutting down, and i can hear my heartbeat in my ears.... it is then that enlightenment comes.

when i get nekked, cross my legs and hum, all I can think of is girlies.

that my two cents.

The idea of meditation is to quiet our 'inner talk' so that the 'higher wisdom' can through our thick skull....You can do this by thinking only of one thing so that the other many 'murmurs' can fade into darkness. It's better to read a guide like the many suggestions presented here but for a start, instead of thinking only of one thing-get yourself relaxed, close your eyes and examine the contents of your thoughts-see how many there are! If you get used to examining your thoughts then you practice the meditation techniques more easily.

What I found best for meditation is to get some very very slow music, like a waterfall or a slow guitar and sit after a workout. Close your eyes, think of the body you want to achieve, calmly, invision yourself in that body and the people you will meet and the people you will inspire. Meditation does not have a specific technique. everybody is different. the goal of meditation is to relax yourself, everybody is relaxed differently.

It's hard, but you have to try to erase all the thoughts that are disturbing your mind. Respiration and music are useful allies.

FF is unto something.

I've read a good bit on meditation and have read some examples on how to explain how to know you are actually meditating.

You know when you are tired or out of breath like hell...you put your hands on your knees while bending over to try to recoup...well right there - that is meditation. I dare you to find a better example of how to relax more than this. When you are this tired you only want to relax - so badly that you think of nothing but your breathing and your relaxation state.

When you get back from a crazy day of work, you fall into your bed or couch and in the next couple of seconds are in pure bliss. This is meditation also.

Meditation can be used for a number of things. Not just relaxation...

I bought "Meditation for Dummies" (don't laugh.... I really did. LOL) and it helped a lot. The reason I used to have trouble meditating is that I could not turn off the inner chatter. But once I learned to accept that my mind was not going to be quiet at first it made it easier. So every time I noticed myself straying away from my breath, I would just bring myself back without getting frustrated. The more I practiced, the less inner chatter.

Also I think there is a big misconception about meditation. People get so concerned about if they are doing it right or not and if they don't feel like they are floating or feel immediate benefits, they give up. Really, if you just sit for a couple of minutes in quiet while extending your exhale when you breathe, you'll notice the calming effect almost immediately.

But you have to make sure you're breathing properly. Some people breathe through their chest instead of their abdomen so their breaths are really shallow. In order to experience the benefits of meditation you have to learn how to breathe through your diaphragm.

Before I go to sleep at night I lay on my back, relax and focus on a longer exhale and I've noticed I fall asleep faster AND I sleep more sound. You don't have to sit upright and chant phrases to experience the benefits of meditation. Once I realized this, I've been able to benefit from meditation much more.

what you will need..

You need to empty your mind, first.

Then, you can go with a calming music. Combine it with some effective breathing techniques. It's very useful!
