Knee Pain may be due to bodybuilding and exotic dancing - need answers

Hi! I am new to the forum. :)

Question:

I never exercised much until my early 20s. For about a year or so, I got into bodybuilding, and was lifting a lot of weight for my size. I also did aerobics 3 times a week, but I used improper shoes. I quit working out when I began exotic dancing. I had to bend my knees alot and wear heels every night. This went on off and on for about 5 years. My knees hurt during this time, but little did I know that my bf at the time was giving me cortisone shots in my sleep. I have not exercised since, which would be about 7 years. Now I am getting back into beginning aerobics again. When I work out, my knees hurt, and they make little cracks and pops when I bend them. Could someone give me any ideas as to whether my knees may be injured and what I should do?

What's cortisone?

I had a lot of luck with reducing knee pain with leg extensions and leg curls. After your orthopedic surgeon verifies there is no damage that exercise won't exacerbate, start with a light weight and a lot of reps (up to 100 per set) and gradually increase the weight over time. As the surrounding muscles and connective tissue get stronger from the weight lifting the pain should decrease.

Cortizone is a temporary solution to injury - gets rid of swelling on ligaments and muscles that have been damaged - particularly used by professional soccer players who have injuries before big games etc - they take the injection, play in the game, and rest afterwards.

you should go see a doctor about your knee. the reason is that cortizone is an anti-inflammatory agent(which is great as chris said above) the problem is that it's KILLER on ligments/joint when overused. it essentially erodes the cartilage in the area.

now i'm not saying you have that problem, but you have to get checked out by a physician and they must look into your knee issue. cortizone shots could have caused some permanent damage(here is hope it did not)
