Knee Pain after Workouts

It doesn't matter what form of cardio I do...running, stair climbing, bike (stationary or real) or elliptical: my knees hurt. It's usually my left knee and kicks in after maybe 30 mins or so of running...if i use the stationary bike it can take even just 15 mins. what can i do to strengthen my joints so that i don't end up needing surgery in a couple of years?

i'm female, age 27 and weigh 105 lbs. i work out regularly. i don't stretch before workouts: could this be a problem?

i've grown up not drinking milk and therefore getting less calcium/vitamin D than i need. i'm trying to catch up by drinking milk a few times a week now in smoothie form in addition to plain yogurt, cheese, etc. i'm not a fan of pill dependency and would rather not rely on vitamin supplements.

i also have good quality running shoes.

any advice? thanks!

Try some glucosamine good stuff :] Is a pill tho =[ you can get in liquid form I guess haha and always stratch and warm up so you dont get injured

If you are allergic to shellfish, you might want to try the non-shellfish Glucosamine. I'm not that allergic to shellfish, but I had a horrible reaction to the chitin they use in the regluar Glucosamine products, so I had to switch to a non-shellfish Glucosamine product made from vegetable sources.

When it comes to something like this, seek advice from a sports medicine doctor that specializes in orthopaedic surgery. You'll want someone who's progressive in their field and works with athletes. They can then give you good preventative and rehab advice.

My sports medicine doc was awesome. I was having a number of problems related to my lower back, right thigh, and left knee that she was able to fix very easily and didn't keep me out of the weight room or activity.

Im just gunna ask if you were properly fitted for your running shoes. They may be good quality but wrong for you. Wheres the pain anterior, posterior, medial, lateral???

Just as a first measure, have you taken a few days off yet? I've always been a pretty good runner, and one time I started having pretty bad pain in my ankle afterwards. I ran on it a couple more times, but it just hurt, and sucked all day. I just rested my legs up for a week, and eased into a short run. Kept working my way back, and never had a problem again.

Sometimes things just need to get back to full strength, I think. No harm in trying that out before seeking a doctor, really.

thanks for the replies guys. i'll google glucosamine now, since i know next to nothing about it :)

i_love_muscle: thanks for the alert...i'm not allergic but i'm vegetarian so i would prefer the non-shellfish version.

evolution: it doesn't seem that extreme to visit a doctor yet which is why i haven't done that so far...my friend's bf is a sports rehab guy tho, i'll check with him for suggestions!

NBS: i bought them at sport chek with the help of a sales clerk? i don't think that counts as properly fitted. i did try out a bunch of styles of running shoe and picked my current ones (adidas supernova) because they're extremely lightweight and flexible. i've had shoes by nike and reebok in the past and have experienced similar problems.

mark: i dont run every day and not even that hard to warrant taking time off. weird...

i'm just focusing on technique at this point (i.e not running like an idiot) and trying to maintain a balanced diet...also keeping my dairy and protein intake higher than it used to be. i'm going to start stretching too...lets see if these things help.
