Knee is killing me when I jog

I have gone from walking about half an hour a day, to jogging only about 2 km's, with walk stops, so I'm new at this. When I jog, everything feels fine, but when I wake up in the morning, my left knee is killing me (right knee is fine). It's bad to the point of me limping. When I walk for a bit, I can feel it getting better, but if I sit even for a minute, it starts to really hurt again when I get up - it's like when it's not in use, it locks up. It will hurt for days, and it's not even swelled up. I've never had knee/leg problems whatsoever in my 23 years, no surgeries or anything! It this so serious I need to see a doctor, or should I wear a brace? I'm baffled as well why only one leg is giving me so much pain! Please help, thanks a lot!

Your knees are not something to take risks with, and no one here can really diagnose it for you, see a doctor and get yourself checked out!

If your doctor cannot find anything worng it could very likely be your shoes.

Good running shoes only last about 300-500 miles so if you are running in the shoes you've been wearing 90% of the time for the pastyear they are probably not good running shoes.

Also, there are a lot of factors that go into the way you run and the way your foot hits the ground, and they design running shoes for all of those specific factors. So if there is nothing "wrong" with your knee, you may want to go to a runner's store and get an opinion on the best shoes for your running style.

This site goes into further detail:

In most cases the knee (being a "dumb" joint) is not the major problem to attempt to fix. The postural alignment and wear of the shoe is a big clue (like someone already mentioned). The problem usually is in lack of ankle mobility and somewhat the hip mobility (IMO).
You may want to return to walking for a short time and work on your functional strength and mobility. Running is suicide to the joints...... be careful.

Is it on the outside of you knee? Does it hurt worse on stairs, (in my case) especially going down?

If so, you got yourself a case of ITBS I bet. Rest, icing, a few specific stretches, and a roller (hard to explain) should do the trick. Make an appointment with a physical therapist, they should put you on track. Just DONT keep going on it. I did and believe me, it sucks.

Thanks so much everyone! And yes, Thor, it does hurt more when I'm walking down the stairs.
I see my doc on Monday. Again, thanks!

Agreed. alot of people with knee problems dont see proffessionals and start doing all sorts of exersices for their knee, when the problem often lies in the ankle or hip.
