Just Starting!

Hi everyone! I decided today would be the day to finally share my before/"today" photos. - On July the fourth I began a contest with my family in which we have decided to stick together and encourage each other to lose thirty pounds each by New Year's Eve. Loser treats the winners to a healthy dinner!

I'm twenty two years old, and come from an overweight family. Several years ago my Mom and her twin sister both had weight loss surgeries which did great things for both of them. My Mom was more active then she had been since I was a child and has been at her happiest since then. I'm not nearly as big as she once was but I think to drop a few pounds would give me much more energy and just make me feel and look better overall.

These photos were taken less then a week ago. I wanted encouragement for myself and to see my side shot is all I need! Hopefully I will succeed with diet and exercise. I see this as my biggest challenge since I am a flight attendant. If any of you know a flight attendant then I'm sure you've heard the horror stories of weight gain! : )

I'm 5'3 and starting out at 170 pounds.

I hope to meet others and find and give even more encouragement.

Brandi

Heya, first off, welcome =) And second..you are already a gorgeous woman, and you're in the right frame of mind to lose the weight! Having something such as a long term goal like that really helps, and with family members? Makes the whole thing seem fun. Good luck!

Good for you for starting. You can do this, just stick with it. Nomater what your career is you will have challenges. Just stick with your plan nomatter what time zone you're in and you will succeed.

You can do it!!!! You have about the exact body shape that I do, so I'll be looking TO YOU for inspiration. Don't let me down. ;)

Hi Brandi,
You are on the right site for support. Congratulations on your start!!
I am right there with you, 5'4" and CW 167.5 and our GW is pretty similar also. Feel free to ask questions!!!

Hi everyone! : )

Thank you all for your kind words and sweet support. I am finally happy to have seen people who are at the same weight as me and looking towards the same goal as well. I can't wait to get to know you all. : D

I did have my first set back today (yesterday - just realized it's after midnight). I went and got a membership at the YMCA for my family and my sister got one for her children and herself. Staying commited to working out while home is probably going to be my biggest problem but with my sister by my side I'm sure I'll come through. Anywho ... when we went yesterday it was much more busy and I got the impression that others were looking "down" at us. Like we weren't taking working out seriously because we are large. Does this kind of thing normally happen?

I can handle people looking at me but while on the treadmill for 20 min (my aim was thirty yesterday) I slowed down to a normal walk to get my legs feeling normal before I got off and went off to do something else. However, when I slowed down a woman walked up to me, rolled her eyes and asked if I was done yet. I looked around at the person next to me who had been on for well over and hour and said I was almost through ... she looked furious! I'm trying to not let it get to me but I hope this kind of thing doesn't normally happen. My sister and I left then, I was too upset. My neice who is three was in the day care center there and pretty upset to have to leave but tomorrow I'm staying no matter what.

Anywho, sorry for my rant and HI to everyone again! I feel like I'm finally truly commited. -

Hey there, getting a membership at a gym is a big step. I am still waiting to do that. I have been to gyms in the past and i also feel people look when you first start. It may be in part that they are regulars and see a new person, but I believe it is mostly in our heads.

now as for that lady, I would have kept slowing down and going fast, then slowing down, then going fast etc... etc... you get the idea. Instead of getting "depressed" over that situation use it as motivation.

well good luck as you start another day...

It is going to be the hardest in the beginning, but keeeeep at it. IT DOES get easier! Don't let anyone bring you down!

Hi there Brandi,

first off let me start by saying, I give you credit for joining a gym period. Personally speaking, I prefer to workout alone and at home, clear away from gawking eyes. haha

Now... as for the "eye roller," some people have nothing better to do than to be idiots. Somehow it makes them feel better about themselves. I find wit to be a great way to clear the air. I had the same situation happen to me, but on an elliptical. She rolled her eyes and my comment was, "That's right... Take it ALL in. Get ALL of me burnt into that little mind of yours." It pissed her off like no tomorrow, but it made me laugh insanely. hahaaa (Hey.. laughing burns calories also. :) ) Don't let anyone get you down, Brandi. You're doing great. If it happens again, just report her. Afterall, you paid your dues and you have EVERY right to take whatever time you want! :)

Hey Brandi, good luck with it! I've just started too but I'm a wee bit heavier than you! One thing you've definiately got going for you is that you're all in proportion and carry your weight well. I'm super pear shaped so it's all on my tummy and hips which looks a bit weird! lol

As for that woman in the gymn, there are always going to be rude, obnoxious people in the world, unfortunately, but I've found the best way to annoy them is to pretend you have no idea they're being rude and be polite to them and smile sweetly. (it throws them completely! lol)

"Are you finished yet?" *roll eyes*
"Nope, not yet, tell you what, come back in 10 minutes and I should be done by then, ok? "*sweet smile*

Welcome, and GOOD LUCK on your new venture to lose that weight. I think your pictures look great!! In the pictures your legs look long, and you have very nice shoulders already!! Once you meet your goal weight, WOW you are going to have all those passengers calling you over just to check you out girlfriend!! HEHEHE nothing wrong with that either. Good luck, I'll be checking in to see how your progressing.

Hi Brandi,

Congratulations on getting a gym membership!! This was one of my biggest challenges in starting my exercise. I am not confortable with guys looking at me while I work out but i think it is all in my head and probably just feeling insecure. anyway i found an all women gym close to my house (not Curves). It is a small place but have everything you need for a good work-out. I found everybody there extremely supportive no matter their fitness level is.
Just ignore people like that woman in the gym. You paid your membership and you have the right to be there.
there will be always rude people I just choose to ignore them!!

Thank you all so much for your encouraging words and letting me know just what to do the next time I feel put down in the gym. I would really appriciate if you all leave links to your main page that you are writing on here (for some reason I'm not understanding how to find the pages lol).

I didn't get to work out yesterday since I had to be up and on a plane at 5:45 a.m. and be in a training room all day long. Luckily for passengers we are trained two days a year by FAA rules. Anywho I got in late and had to be back up this morning to be back on the same 5:45 flight. Now I sit at the airport all day until they call me (this is the exact reason I've gained weight the past year). What do they serve at the airport that's healthy to eat? Nothing. I'm working past this though and looked up calorie counts on anything I could eat. I might have to have McDonalds but I at least know what I'll be eating and knowing that if I do have to eat there it will be minimum. - I know a lot of people will be saying "what about salad places?" I'm a picky eater, I want to change my eating habits but if you are terrified of food the way some people are terrified of planes it just doesn't work. I lost fifty pounds three years ago eating less and better. I've never had to stray towards things that scare me.

Anywho, I'll be looking forward to your links. Thank you all again!

When I was returning to Hawaii via plane, I had a HORRIBLE lay over in Arizona (12 hours). I felt a little let down, because I was wasting a day not exercising (just started out at the time). I decided to throw my items in a locker and took a brisk walk all over that monstrous airport. It was also pretty early, so there weren't many people around. I used the seats to do arm dips. hahaaa (triceps) I'm just a weirdo like that, but hey...I got a workout fitted in there. haha

: ( I wish we could do things like that, we have two things against us ... our uniforms and we can't bring attention to ourselves. Which is weird I know. I've wrote the company about asking for a workout room in the airport but they aren't going to go for it. Argh! I find it admiring that you were able to do that though! I am very inspired.

Brandi : )

Yay! Been in Mexico (well back and forth) for the past four days and all of my overnights were extremely short so no chance to work out however I walked more in the terminal and still watched what I ate. I'm down three pounds (from starting weight)! Which is great since on my weigh in last Thursday I had gained two pounds. I'm pretty positive of the reason behind the gain LOL.

hope you are all well,

Brandi

Keep up the good work.... I belong to a gym also ..... and I hate when people come up to me awhile I am running on the treadmill! Argh! I want to jump down there throat but I hold back and push my mph harder so it does motivate me!!! instead of being a smart ass I increase resistance and mph....:hug2:
