Hi guys. Looking for a quick bit of advice, in lamen's terms if possible.

Basically Ive finally gotten around to signing up at my local gym. I'm a pretty skinny guy and want to focus on building up a bit. I'm planning on going every other day, but otherwise I don't really know what sort of regime I should use.

I understand one of the basic principles is to do 6 - 8 reps of as heavy weights as I can, then rest, then do it again etc. Is this right?

But then I've heard people saying you should only focus on specific body parts at each visit. If I did this though I can't see me spending much more than half an hour in the gym each time if Im only doing a few sets on each machine.

Also, what body parts should I focus on exactly? I'm reasonably happy with my abs, and assume I should also be working pecs, shoulders, back and arms?

Finally, is protein powder an option for me? Would it speed things up or is that more for people who are really going for the "huge" look?

Thanks for any help

Just start training and learning. Supplments are fine but get into a groove training wise before you consider that.

This is what works, its been working for 30 years.

I think that you should get yourself a personal trainer. I just recently got one just for 5 sessions. He really helped me alot with showing me the proper way of using the equip. in the gym. GOOD LUCK!

Definately get a trainer free weight is where you get the best results. Also get a trainer because if you have a trainer your less likely to get an injury or something thats going to stuff you up completely.

Diffinately get a trainer if you're starting out. The supplements as well as a good protein diet will help.

Also I know it may sound like a cheap plug...:) but check out the latest podcast on muscle developement at:

dont train bodyparts, train your body as a whole system. basic movements are all you need for now: squats, deadlifts, cleans, presses, rows, chins and dips.

pick a simple set/rep scheme say 3 by 5, or 3 by 6, etc. start light then try to add weight to the bar each workout.
