Hi,
I decided I wanted to lose weight On Friday and just decided to start being Healthier. I've literally cut my calorie intake in half and started walking a mile every other day, and doing crunches and push ups at night.

I'm a big guy. 6'4'', 260 Pounds, 22 Year old Male.

How many calories should I be eating a day?
What kind of exercise should I be doing and how often?

I'd like to eventually get down to 210 and stay there, I realize that will take a long time and be a long-term lifestyle change commitment. I'd love to drop 15 by September which seems more than doable.

Pleas help?

Oh, and according to the calculator on

"To lose about one pound per week, you'll need to cut back to 3,165 calories per day. "

I was eating around 3000 calories a day, sometimes higher, but since Friday I've been making sure to stay under TWO thousand.

Is that good or too little?

Spend some serious quality time reading the stickied threads especially in on topic, nutrition and exercise...

You'll get the answers to your questions...

There really is no one size fits all when it comes to calories - but as you'll find when you READ -- that it's best to start at a higher calorie range than lower and see how your body reacts..

Get an account at - get a set of measuring implements and learn what a portion size is and start recording everything that goes into your mouth...

then cut back a little

I was literally exactly your size and have lost 40 lbs by eating anywhere between 2500 and 3200 cal a day at the start.
I am not around 2200 at max but I am 6'4 and weighed 260-265 in January.
under 2000 is too little in my opinion.

Thanks, that's comforting. How long did it take you to drop 40?

I had a bit more today, about 1850 calories, as compared to 1500 since friday. I feel totally full, should i eat 2000 anyways?

Thanks, sorry, I did read a lot of thread sbefore posting, I was hoping to find someone like the guy below who had some relevant advice directly for my situation.

I started keeping a "food journal" and man did that help. Amazing how much crap i was eating in between meals just by "picking" out of boredom around the office and at home.

Take a look at the which you can find in a sticky topic in the nutrition forum. I also would agree that your calorie intake should be higher than 2000. Don't kill yourself in the beginning!

From my experience it is not an exact science.
I varied greatly some days/weeks. IMO if you are full at 2000 dont eat more. But dont convince yourself you are full so that you do not eat more.

if you are doing regular activity, again IMO, you will need more than 1850.
The lowest i went was 1800 and that was a mistake.

it has taken me 5 months to lose the 40. i messed up a bit and ht a plateau.

wow! do you mind if i ask what kind of exercise you were doing and how often and all that?

I've just been walking a lot and doing crunches, pushups, etc. In five days i've lost weight in my face and gut already.

Let me get on my home computer tonight and I will send you what i do. mind you, this is to achieve my goals- not yours.
I want to lose weight yes but have certain fitness goals i want also.

You could search my username and 'workout' and i think it will come up.

Thanks a lot. I really just want to lose weight and tone up a little bit. Not looking to be a bodybuilder or be able to break glasses when i take my shirt off. Just want to lose weight and not be quite so flabby.

Anyone got ideas for what i should be doing?

To be honest with you I can only point you in the direction.
I do around 4 hours of running/elliptical a week and around 2 hours of weight training. What you need to do depends on your goals. Trust me, I was once like you- confused as to where to go now that you made the choice to get healthier. Read the stickies in the exercise and nutrition forums- there is a lot of information there. Try to make a program and see how it goes. To be honest- right ow you could do almost anything and it would work. Concentrate on the basic lifts and core. Cardio is your friend but do not overdo it.

I am not qualified to craft a program for you but can help you tweak one you have tried.
