Just starting, need some advice.

Hi everyone! :)

I'm planning to do something about my weight with the start of 2010 (no use starting now with christmas coming up, so I figured the new year is a good time).
I'm a girl, 5'9" tall and weigh 143~148lbs, it fluctuates a lot.
Suprisingly I've already lost 26 pounds this year by doing essentially nothing, I didn't starve, diet or exercise, but still lost all that weight over a course of about 6 months (Feb. to August). No change since then, though. I have no idea whether I lost fat or muscle, but since I haven't done any workout in YEARS there shouldn't have been much muscle to lose..:confused4:

Anyway, I definitely still have quite a bit fat to lose, especially in the good ol' belly and butt/thigh areas. Using the tape measurement method and an online calculator, I got 23.13% BF. At least it isn't in the obese range. lol
So I'm going to start going to the gym in January, that's for sure; now I'm wondering what you recommend I do there? I had my mind set on cardio, but I've noticed weight training is mentioned a lot around here..? Since I'm not a busy person I can go to the gym pretty much anytime every day, by the way.

I'm currently not following any particular diet, and I'm aware that has to change, too.. I've read some threads about nutrition but I'm a little slow on the uptake regarding that. And since it also depends on what I'm going to do at the gym it'd be nice if you could recommend some basic guidelines to follow for a diet, too.

Ahem, well.. that's it for now :D I think this board is pretty neat.. and I hope some of you can help me a little with all this.

Have a nice day, and for the Americans, happy holidays..? ;)

Congrads for making this the year of change. You're already on a great path... for specific workout advice I recommend a program of both weight training and cardio. With the weights first followed by cardio. Do full body workouts... none of the body builder style with arms one day, legs another. For burning calories and toning total body is by fat the bet and it's what I use with my .

Nutrition is really important... I don't suggest counting calories but just following a clean eating healthy diet. It can still taste great but if you're not used to cooking for yourself that will change. Good luck!
