Hello everyone. I'm new to this forum. My name is Ben. Nice to meet you all.

Let me start off by saying that this seems like a really awesome forum and I've already read some helpful things after only being on this site a few minutes.

So here is my somewhat basic story.

I'm 6'1 and my current weight is 210 pounds. I've always been about 30 pounds overweight since longer than I remember. It seems like every time I try to lose weight, I end up starving myself and then overeating like crazy afterwards and gaining more back.

Before I started this diet, I was probably around 220-225 pounds. I was way too afraid to weight myself because I'd never been that out of shape before. I was eating fast food 2-3 times a day a basically chugging soda or sugary drinks all day long, as well as going out to eat all the time, followed by the movies and the buttery popcorn and nachos that are SO high in calories.

Then I said enough is enough about 6 weeks ago and I started doing 1 hour of elliptical cardio per day, and eating my recommended caloric intake of 1500 calories per day. I weighed myself last week and I was down to 210, although I don't know how much I initially weighed at the start, lol.

Anyways, here is a rough draft of my current diet. I have a really hard time with lettuce so I'll come right out and say that I don't do salads often.

Breakfast: bowl of bran flakes with 1% milk containing half of a sliced banana, and 1 scrambled egg with light salt.

Lunch: One 4oz lean center cut pork chop with brown rice and an orange on the side. With an 8 oz glass of 1% milk.

Dinner: 6 ounces of grilled salmon with garlic and light salt, one serving of black beans with cayenne pepper, with broccoli and a glass of hot water(for digestion).

Also, I've completely cut out sugary drinks throughout the day. Which I literally thought I'd NEVER be able to do. I was heavily addicted to soda and sweet tea. I had to ween myself off. I'd drink a small glass of soda, and then make sure that I drank at least 1.5x to double the amount of water. So basically any time I drank soda I'd counter it with water, until my body finally got used to accepting the water as a suitable beverage. Now I'm drinking at least 64-80 ounces of water per day and a little unsweetened tea.

I heard that hot tea or hot water is great for digestion so I've been drinking at least a few glasses of hot water per day. Anyway, any suggestions would be great. Thanks so much and it's wonderful to meet you all. My next weigh in is on Wednesday of this week so I'll post my progress.

Hi, Ben & welcome to the forum. You're right. It is an awesome forum. You have made some good changes, especially cutting right down on soda & increasing your water intake. I'm not a huge fan of lettuce either but love raw & cooked vegetables. Experiment with different veg. There is such a huge variety & you may find that your tastes change. Habits can be changed & with the right mindset you can make permanent positive changes to your diet & lifestyle. Well done on making the decision to do so & then doing something about it. Re: tea. I love Peppermint tea & drink it every day. I find it really refreshing. A squeeze of lemon in with your water is good too, either hot or cold. Cheers, Cate.

Hello Cate! Thanks a lot for the ideas. I've really been meaning to add more vegetables into my diet. I do like spinach a lot and many other cooked veggies. I'll have to keep that in mind next time I'm at the grocery store. I'm also a huge fan of tea. Peppermint is one type I've yet to try, but that'll be something different for me to experiment with. Thanks again.

Hi there, and welcome to the forums.

Soda is somewhere I expected to struggle a lot more, but there are really good alternatives, at least if you don't want to just go straight water for the rest of your life. The grocery stores where I live sell "Sparkling Ice" waters which are basically just flavored waters but they're also carbonated. I found for myself that it wasn't the soda itself I was missing, it was the feeling of the carbonation. I've been 100% off of soda for 3 months now, something I would have never even imagined before.

And I'll be lurking your diary to see if you get any more good tea suggestions. I'm a big sweet tea lover myself but I can't help but heap on the sugar more than is necessary.

Welcome to the forum!

What a coincidence... we have (about) the same starting weight, height, and current weight, and we started losing at the same time! ;)

Your diet looks good!

A general suggestion: what I like to do is when I cut unhealthy things out of my lifestyle, I try to add healthy alternatives that I like just as much. For example, I have cut out chips, but I have started eating avocados as a snack now (which I really like). And I have stopped buying soda (regularly), which I replaced with water now (I like water... especially with ice cubes, which I now always have in my freezer) and occasionally I get a smoothy.

Thanks! Same here on the sweet tea. My grandma used to make it as a kid, and I swear she probably put like 4 cups of sugar in each batch. Lol. But I've always loved it. Never realized how that much sugar would affect me until the past few years. That's a good idea on the sparkling water. I'll have to try that. I had a small smoothie the other day which was a bit of a cheat, but I don't think I'll do that again for a while. It seems like the smallest amount of sugary drink will make me "relapse" and want to just down like an entire 2 liter or something. Sugar addiction is serious stuff.

Ha, many similarities. Same age as well apparently, haha. Nice.

I like the idea of replacing the garbage foods with good food. The exercise I'm doing is making my hunger go insane during the night time and I'll wake up feeling like I need food. So as a result, I've been keeping bananas near my bed, or a bag of granola. I've been on this diet for over a month now, and I've actually started to enjoy eating healthy. I eat when I'm hungry, so I enjoy things so much more. Before I was just shoveling things into my mouth at any given time just to satisfy my emotions. Thanks for the support.
