The run down:
- I'm in my mid-thirties
- 5'10''
- 217 lbs
- knee issues (if I cut the grass in our 1/2 acre yard I will have knee swelling and pain for days)
- major shoulder issues (can't throw or swing anything, and no repetitive lifting over my head. If I do, pain for days or weeks)
- Can't have gluten
- Can't have dairy

I almost never eat fast food. I do eat at Chipotle too much (cut down though). Hardly ever have soda. Never drink alcohol. Don't smoke.

I've been gaining roughly 5 lbs a year for the past 12 years. Sometimes I plateau for awhile but never really lose weight. I walk a few miles a day at my job but it isn't a few miles all at once so it doesn't really do anything. Treadmilling when my knee isn't acting up will often result in hip pain the next day...

All that to say...I need help. I don't know what my options are for exercise when my joints cause me such problems. I also drive several hundred miles a day and I end up snacking (usually healthy snacks at least) to stay awake and alert a lot.

are you tracking your calories ?

the key to weight loss is diet, when your weight comes down then your ability to exercise usually improves

Also - I'm wondering whether you are setting the treadmill too fast for your current fitness level... Try setting the treadmill a little slower and see whether you still get the pain. Slow walking is better than no walking...

I've tried tracking my calories a few times. Honestly it feels like so much guess work when a lot of home cooked meals are involved. I can never seem to stick with it for long.

Perhaps you are right about the treadmill. I don't ever recognize it as being too fast though because I don't get pain until the next day.

Unnamed girl I feel like I've walked in your shoes! I'm 5'9 and was diagnosed with stage 4 arthritis in my knees in my early 30's. I hovered just above 200 and worked out regularly, albeit painfully at the gym. I lost the weight when I changed my diet and my knees rarely hurt anymore. I still have arthritis and really feel horrible with certain weather but it was imparitive that I take the weight off my knees and joints if Ididn't want to face knee replacement before 40.
Everybody has to choose a diet that's right for them. I do best with gluten free, high protein & moderate fat diet with lots of vegetables and very little baked products or potatoes. I lost 65 pounds, popped out 3 kids in the past 2 years (I was 8 months pregnant with baby #1 in my avatar and I'm back here to lose the last 20 pounds. If you want exercise to not hurt so much and you wish to prolong the longevity of your knees you will do your joints a huge favour by taking as much weight off them as what's healthily possible. I wish you all the best with it, knee isssues aren't fun!

Couldn't agree more, Charlie's angel and 76 RI, knee issues aren't fun. I had a knee injury and I put on 15 pounds as it's a struggle to workout when you are experiencing knee pain. I am a certified aromatherapist (hobbyist), studied basics of holistic and traditional nutrition, I did many hours of online research and I finally managed to lose 15 pounds and keep it off. I agree with Charlie's angel, we have to choose a diet that's right for us. Like yourself, my physical therapist/physiotherapist do well losing well with gluten-free diet, some people do well with calorie counting & reduction and I do well with a combination of paleo (I follow the spirit of Paleo but not the strict meal plans) and superfoods.

Strengthening the core and quads are very important, you can do so without hurting your knees while you are working on your weight. I manage to 'grow' the quad muscles of my injured knee, no more uneven thighs!

For your shoulder issues, have you tried any stretching? Or does it hurt too much to stretch? In order not to aggravate it, replace your handbag with a backpack/ rucksack.

I have tried many glucosamine health supplements and there is one work really well. I am not selling any health supplements, products nor doing MLM. I just share it as a contribution, if you are interested, you can pm me.

76ri, how long can you walk a day? have you tried superfoods?
