To start out: I am 18 years old, 5'4", and 125 lbs. I would like to lose 5-10 lbs. My waist is 26" and my hips are 39.5". So I guess it's pretty obvious where I store my fat. I've just started the Couch-to-5K program because I would like to be able to run and I also think it will help me to get into shape. I also ride my bicycle daily (although today's ride was cut short due to rain).

Today's jog was really tough. I stretched a little before I went for the brisk walk, and during the walk I found my calves to have pain traveling through them (not staying in one place). Once I started the jogging-walking part the pain left, and I started out strong. I think maybe I went too fast/hard in the beginning because I halfway through it I was already really exhausted. Granted, I decided to do this at 2PM in the hot Florida sun. For future reference, I'll start earlier. By the end I could barely even jog anymore, but I felt good about doing it. At the very end, I started to get really cold and my calves were tingling a little. I'm not really sure what to make of that. My back also started to hurt while I was jogging. I joined the golf team in 8th grade and I had the same back pain after playing. It's what made me hate golf, along with how bad I was at it.

I'm going to China in four weeks to study Chinese, and I'll be there for six weeks. I'll have to do part of the program there. Hopefully by the end of the summer I'll be at my goal.

Today I worked for 8 hours at Sonic, and I barely got to sit down. I found squatting (to get things that were further down) to be very difficult because my legs were sore from the jog yesterday, but most other movements weren't that bad. I also rode my bike this evening for an hour and fifteen minutes. I find cycling to be fun and refreshing, and I try to keep a decent pace. I'm going to jog again tomorrow.

I'm feeling good.

harlo! wooo..... i can only do 5k once a month. Ha. Maybe u can teach a thing or two when u succeed at the program. I like to jog too.

I would love to learn how to play golf. But then it's so cumbersome bringing all the gear when I dun drive.

hope u hv a good time in China! but you might want to drink more water there cos some food can be very salty!

I've never been able to jog before for more than a few minutes. I'm hoping this will help me get better at it. I really didn't like golf when I played it. 8th grade was the only year I tried that.

I tried to do the second jog for the couch-to-5k program today and I couldn't finish it. It's the same thing as last time, but I only did about 16 minutes (not including the 5 minutes brisk walk) before I had to stop. I got a painful stitch in my side pretty early, and it just got worse and worse as I went on. My head also started throbbing, so I made myself quit. I went out a little earlier today, 12PM, but the sun is still very hot at that time. I need to aim for 10AM. I also think I should drink more water beforehand.

I decided to record my eating/exercise on FitDay to give me a better idea of what I'm doing. Well I did the 16-ish minute jog earlier and I'm about to go for an hour long medium intensity bike ride. So I typed all that in and I typed in what I've eaten today. I also said my lifestyle was "standing work (housework)" to account for my job (since I'm on my feet for 6-9 hours most days). Is it possible I really need 2500 calories (without me doing any extra exercise)? I guess I should eat more, although that's not the final calorie count for the day.

Final calorie intake for the day was:

I wore the skates at Sonic today. :)

I woke up ravenous this morning. I actually went to bed hungry because I didn't want to eat at 2AM, so my hunger woke me up. I've been eating steadily all day, but I can't seem to get rid of the hunger. I guess I should just keep eating. My stomach is actually growling right now, so my body is definitely tying to tell me something. I have had ~1500 calories so far today. I also went for my bike ride and worked for 5 hours at Sonic.

Here's my FitDay link:

Okay I'm going insane here. Calories for the day are now at 1859 and I still feel really really stomach-growling hungry. And weak.

I had a couple of eggs and felt better. Still a little hunger, but I ignored it. Today I haven't had much to eat and don't feel that hungry. A little bit. I'll eat something shortly.

I did the third day of the couch-to-5k and that's the end of the first week. I got all the way through it today and the stitch was very mild. Unfortunately, my bike has a flat tire and I can't fix it until my mom gets back in town. I have another bike to get to work, but I can't ride it around because the chain falls off a lot. I want to take my bike to a bike shop. I wish they'd clean up the glass off of the road so I wouldn't get flats.

Well yesterday I did a workout video to partially make up for not riding my bike, and this morning I continued on the couch-to-5k program, and I had to step it up today. 90/60 second jog/walk split (as opposed to 60/90). But I forgot I got 60 seconds to walk so I only took 30 the first few times, and it wore me out fast. I didn't even finish the 7th (out of 8) jog, so hopefully I do better next time when I do it right. I'm going to do another workout video this evening and try to go to bed earlier.

The scale is consistently saying 123 or 123.5 instead of 125 (or more) and 124.5, so I've lost a little weight in these past few weeks. It's encouraging. I'd like to be 121 by the time I go to China. That's 3.5 weeks away.

I got on the scale this morning and it said 122 lbs.

About a month and a half ago I went to the campus clinic and they had to take my weight. I stepped on, shoes and clothes and the day's meal in my stomach, and it said 129 lbs. This really awakened me to a problem. I have to stop it before it gets worse. When I got back from college (about a month ago), the scale said 126 lbs (empty, naked weight). This is probably what I was at the clinic minus all that other stuff. Since then, the scale has been moving downwards. I have a completely different lifestyle of course because I'm in a different place, and that's facilitated some of the loss. So today the scale said 122 lbs. Like I said yesterday, I would like to be 121 (or 120!) by the time I go to China, and I would also like to be 115 (my goal weight) by the time school starts again in the fall.

Hey, just wanted to come by your diary! Thanks for posting in my diary by the way.

I think it's smart to lose the little extra 5-10 pounds now rather than waiting for the problem to get worse and have to deal with a bigger issue. I wish I would have done something soon, but, can't change that now! I'm just glad I started :) I'm really glad you started early!

Good luck with your weight loss goals :)

Widest part of hips = 39.25" -- I've lost a quarter of an inch! My upper arms are also looking a little smaller in the mirror. And I don't know if I took my waist measurement last time when I was bloated or what, but it's definitely just 1/16th of an inch over 25.5" now. My waist is now almost 2.5" smaller than my ribcage just below my breasts. I didn't really care about losing from there in the first place... but I guess I don't have a choice. I think maybe I've lost more fat than the scale says (4 lbs) and gained some muscle.

I'm going jogging now.

And Risty, thanks for stopping by!

Well the jog didn't go so well. I did about half of what I was supposed to before I had to stop due to a stitch in my side. So I cooled down, stretched, got some water, and watched a movie. After the movie, I went again to do the other half, and had to warm up and cool down again. I'm not sure I'm going to be able to follow this program exactly because it seems really difficult for me right now. Of course, it would definitely help if it weren't so hot outside.

I find that monitoring my breathing pattern helps in keeping the stitch away. If it's on the left side, then I'll breathe out whenever my right foot hits the ground... it somehow keeps the pain away. maybe u can try?

Yeah I've heard that and I've tried it but for some reason it doesn't work for me. Honestly, I think the problem is that I eat too soon before running. It generally is on the left side (although today it was on the right). Saturday I'll make sure I get eat at least an hour before I jog. And I'll drink more water.

yea eating too full too soon to joggin does that. it also slows u down. i once saw a girl running the annual sch race in 4x800m event after eating a big mac meal. her face was whitish after a while and can see her holding on to her side every now and then.

Well I tried again today and didn't make it very long. I started getting the stitch while I was still doing the 5-minute warm up walk. 5 minutes or so after that I was done. It was on the left side today. I tried breathing out on my right side, and that did help alleviate the problem a little, but not very much. I'm kind of gassy right now.. hah... and maybe holding my MP3 player in my hand is throwing my body off balance or something. But I need to time 90 seconds and 60 seconds and that's the only method I have of doing that. Ugh...

I know all about the stupid stitch! I hate it. I always always always get it on my right side. I don't understand why it's only on the one side, but one thing I can say is that it's consistent. I get it often, like when I go on my lunch time walks (I try to walk a nice fast pace) so I always get the stupid stitch. I've learned to ignore it mostly, but I also try and take deeper breaths which tends to help a bit. I'm hoping that if I continue with my walks that it'll eventually go away. It also happens at my cardio kickboxing. At first it would happen in the warm up and now it starts to happen partway through the class, so it seems I might be improving.

I think just taking the deeper breath, getting in more oxygen is what helps. So maybe try taking deeper and slower breaths and see how that works for you.
