Jean's Diary - having no success

All my life I've been the right weight for me. Even after having three kids I got back down to 150. That's my comfortable weight. I am 5'6". I am 35 years old. I had my thyroid removed in my teens. About 5 years ago I went to a new doctor and she changed all my meds and in 4 months I gained 40 pounds. I was so depressed that I gained another 10 after that. Did I quickly act and exercise and lose all the weight, oh heck no. I complained about being fat and did little things here and there but nothing dramatic. I had knee surgery a year ago and I weighed 250. Seeing that on the scale made me cry. As soon as I could start walking again I did and then went back to the gym. 17 months later I now weigh 227. For 6 months though nothing is happening. I walk 1-2 miles per day. I go the gym for an hour 4 days a week and do 1/2 hour elliptical and 1/2 hour weights. I have been eating a lot more fish and veggies and really trying to watch what I eat. I was even recording everything for two months. What happens is I lose 2-3 pounds then gain 2-3 pounds and so for the last 6 months I have been losing and gaining the same 6 pounds and I don't know what to do to lose any more weight. I've thought of joining weight watchers but I really didn't want to join a diet place because I wanted to make life changes and do it on my own. On a daily basis I take in about 1200-1500 calories. I really think I have the eating and exercising thing down but nothing is changing on the scale. I know people say don't worry about what the scale says but it really does matter when it doesn't change. In the last 6 months I have lost inches. I lost 4-5 in my hips and 3 in my thighs. My stomach only 2. That is the hardest spot for me. I'm just really frustrated and I really need some advice from people on what I can do to get to losing weight again other than what I am already doing. I am obviously doing something wrong.

Hi there Jean,

welcome to the WLF. I've noticed you've just begun your journal and lucky me, I'm the first to leave a message. WOOHOOO! :) First off, maybe the reason you're having difficulty losing weight is because your body isn't getting enough calories. When I was 225 lbs, I was working out 5 days a week at a moderate rate (walking and whatnot) and my caloric range was 1950-2300 calories per day. I know that sounds like a lot of calories, but if you restrict yourself too much, your body will go into starvation mode and the scale won't budge. Try using calorie counting sites to help you with logging in everything: or even Wishing you the best and you can do it!!

Hey Jean,

Welcome to WLF. You will find a wealth of knowledge and wonderful fun people on these boards. Sheryl has mentioned oen of the most important things I learned when I first joined here... minimal calories does not = weight loss. You have to find the right balance between caloric intake, your bmr, and the calories you burn while exercising.

Have a great time gettign to know everyone here and looking around. I'm sure you'll find the right balance to get that scale moving down:)

I look forward to seeing you transform.

Hey Jean, welcome. I dont know much about the Thyroid, but I have a friend who is over weight and has thyroid issues too. His doctor changed up his meds and he gained 30 pounds in a month. So maybe it isnt you maybe its the new medication you are on. Can you try to see if you can be put back on your old medicine?

Hello, I am here, sorry I haven't been on lately. Works been busy. Thanks for thinking of me though. I am actually having some luck with my weight loss. It seems to consistently coming off about 1-2 pounds a week. I am continuing to eat smaller portions and walk, I walk 2-3 miles every day at lunch. I find that as long as I am doing that then the weight comes off. Slow weight loss is aggrivating but the benefit has been I haven't even gained 1 pound of it back. I am trying to incorporate some exercise videos at home but I cannot seem to get up in the mornings and get motivated. I have to get up at 4am to get ready and I know the problem is I just need to go to bed earlier but darn it, I like watching tv at night!!! So that is my next goal, exercising at home 2-3 times a week and riding my horses, now that the weather is nice I need to make a point to get out there and ride. I just get so tired working all day and when I get home my motivation goes right out the window. Anyways that's me in a nutshell.

i know excatly how you feel movivation is my downfall! iam glad that you are continuing losing weight also the slower you lose it gives you body more time to adjust :)
