JakeySnakey's Diary

Hi everybody :)

I'm new, so I'll start by introducing myself. My name is Jaclyn and I'm 22 years old and I live in Canada. I'm a full time university student and I work part time on top of that so my schedule is pretty hectic.

I dont have a ton of weight to lose. I could afford to lose 10-15lbs or so. My problem is that i EAT a ridiculous amount of junk food. Its pretty much all I eat. Cookies, ice cream, chips...I just cant help myself!! I've made diaries before and never stuck to it so I'm hoping y ou guys can all help motivate me.

I want to eat around 1200 calories a day but more importantly i want/need to cut out junk food entirely. Not all sugar - just the junk stuff. I already work out, I try to go 3 times a week with a personal trainer....I've gained weight since I started going, I'm not sure if its muscle or the fact that i still eat like a pig.

I'm hesitant to make a timeline of when I want to reach my goal because I really dont want to discourage myself. What d you guys do when you get cravings for bad food?? I just cant help it and I end up feeling like crap everyday. I dont want to go to school tomorrow because i dont want to get dressed because I feel fat.

SO any help is appreciated sooo much, I'm gonna start aiming for 1200 tomorrow with no junk. baby steps :)

Well, first of all, its great that you're starting now rather than waiting until you've gained so much weight that you're unhealthy!

Though, since you don't have too much to lose, and because you work out regularily, I think you may want to aim for higher than 1200 calories a day unless you are really short. Muscle requires more calories to maintain than fat does, so if you don't get enough energy throughout the day, you may stall in your progress at they gym, and possibly even backtrack and lose muscle mass. Additionally, having too few calories can stunt your metabolism so that whenever you happen to eat more than normal, it will stick to you like white on rice!

is a good calculator to figure out how many calories you need a day to maintain your weight, and it also estimates how much you should take in to lose weight at the suggested 1lb/week (or about half a kilo).

As far as cravings go, we all get them. One of the best ways to deal with them is to just distract yourself, since according to some sciencey-guys, most cravings pass in a minute or two unless you spend all of your mental processes thinking about the craving. So, maybe do some homework, watch a movie or call a friend, and then when your done, ask yourself, do you really want it that bad?

In any case, I wish you the best of luck (no, not luck, skill!) in reaching your goal, and staying there!

thanks so much for your reply :)

i am really short, about 5'2....I think I'll start with 1200 and see how it goes....i may have to increase it on gym days.

:D

ahhh!!! i just had a dream i was eating chocolate!!!!! lol

so i just had a healthy breakfast - speciak k with berries (1 cup, 120cal) and skim milk (100 cal).

im off to school now :)

if your eating so much junk, your probably way over 1200 now. maybe over 2,000? so if you all of a sudden try to cut down to 1200 one day, that might be a setup for failure. why not try cutting out junk but limit your caloric intake to 1500 first so you dont feel so deprived? it might help take the sting out of suddenly not getting all the foods your so used to having. you do weights 3 times a week? what about cardio? you should try and get cardio in every day. "they" say a half hour a day to maintain and an hour a day to lose weight. i'm not thrilled about it, but i squeeze it in eveyday to make sure nothing gets out of control! are you drinking lots of water? that really helps with the cravings in between meals/snacks!

Thats a good point, about the 1500. I'm not even sure how much I'm eating...I guess I'll count up today's calories to find out and go from there!! I usually do cardio 3x a week too....its so hard to fit in every day :(

Grand total is......omg 1555!! and i feel like i haven't really eaten that much! :( is that bad?? I feel like thats way too much! I must be eating way more than that on a regular day....I'll definitely make 1500 my goal, at least to start. I weigh about 130ish and I want to get between 115 and 120....(i'm really short)...do you guys think 1500 is okay??

Mmm, special k.

What you ate today looks really good, but I think I'd drop the waffles and syrup and go for the fruit, or veggies...low fat yogurt is really good, too. Wean yourself off of the high calories...slowly lower them down, especially since you work out with a trainer thrice a week. Maybe lower the cals on the off days, lets just say....13-1400, and on workout days 14-1500 might be good.

Also, I see that you like lemonade...I know a fantastic calorie free/fat free recipe that is absolutely delicious. One cup of lemon juice (great value lemon juice from concentrate is what I use), 1 cup of splenda, and a pitcher of water (what, 2 quarts? I can't remember how much is in a typical pitcher). Mix it up, at some ice...and trust me, you don't want to drink it warm. LOTS of ice. It's really delicious, and healthy, too.

Don't stress it so much Jakey. Its great that you're at least trying to reduce your junk food, and its okay to take it in steps rather than going cold turkey.

Have you tried Sun Chips? They are much healthier than potato chips. They're made from corn and wheat I think, and are flavoured with more natural ingredients (not to mention a bag is about 200 calories rather than 300!). Just something to think about :)

Its hard since I live at home....I ask my mom not to buy chips and ice cream because I obviously cant help but eat it....I'll see if she might buy sun chips, although they aren't GOOD for me its a step in the right direction :)

On a positive note my body KILLS from the gym yesterday. A good 'kill' though hehe :D

February 11th....

I'm going to be honest here:

Breakfast: special k - 120
nonfat milk - 100

Snack: chips - 300
sugarfree jello - 50

Lunch: mini-pizza - 200
one cookie - 60

Snack: apple turnover - 250
1% milk - 120

And its 8:00 and I just got up from a nap and haven't eaten dinner....and I'm at 1200 calories of junk food, pretty much. I drank lots of water and will continue to do so.....I'm not that hungry right now but I think I will maybe make a salad for dinner maybe in an hour and call it quits for the night. As crappy as this menu looks for today, its still an improvement. At least I'm SEEING how poorly I'm eating and cutting back....

Any kind words appreciated <3

It does get easier. After a while, you will find you are not having some strong cravings all the day. Take it day by day, and you should do fine. :D

Hey, Eating junk food was my problem, one idea is those 100 calorie Pack things, they come in a variety of flavors, and they are pretty good. Another way to look at it is when you eat the junk food are you even hungry? Once you get the urge to eat junk food, wait 10 minutes and see if you are still thinking about it and if you are then you probably are hungry and then just look into other ideas, like grapes or apples or things that are good for you. If you still want the junk food just eat less of it.

Good luck!

:(

Today I just plain feel like crap. I'm breaking out, I feel like I'm getting too muscular from going to the gym, my hair looks so ugly, I'm SO pale....and I have a midterm worth 40% to study for thats on Tuesday and all I want to do is sleep until I dont feel like crap anymore. There is SO much snow outside....makes me want to sleep even more. I JUST want to sleep...and thats all....this time of year is so sucky......

I feel very unmotivated to go to the gym because I feel like I'm getting muscley and I dont like it. My sister told me my arm looked really muscular and I feel like my legs are just getting bigger and bigger....I usually do 2 sets of 15 with kinda light weights....will this make me big? I work out with a trainer and she says it wont but i feel like im getting bigger :(

I'm also too warm. And just so uncomfortable. And I'm not PMS. This sucks.

K so thats the end of my rant. :(

Feb 12th ....

Breakfast: special k - 120 x 2 = 240
milk - 90 x 2 = 180

Snack: chips = 200
cookie = 70

Lunch: half a hot pocket = 320/2 = 160

Snack: nonfat caramel correto = 250
yogurt w/ berries = 150
2 cookies = 150

Total = 1400

wow....and I feel like I'm really stretchin it to do this well...I must have been doing HORRIBLE calorie wise before....at least its an improvement, tomorrow will be better since I have school all day.

Hey Jaclyn, it's Jaclyn! :)

So I've been reading through your diary and I see how discouraged you are. The first step is to stop beating yourself up over any bad choices you make. You make them, then you learn how to beat them. No point in being upset. The whole point of keeping a food diary is to be honest and to think before you eat. The food diary keeps me honest with myself. I see a plate of fries and then think about having to write it in my diary, and then I don't eat them! Trust me, over time you'll figure it out and you can get support here.

The keys are: fruits, veggies, whole grains, low fat dairy, and protein.

And exercise!

Always eat breakfast and always eat (a small) dessert.

Over time you will start to feel satisfied by the foods that are better for you.
I had an addiction to Dr. Pepper and I switched to diet soda and I hated it at first, but now I love it. You just need to change your habits and the ways you think about food.
