I've gained weight but gained muscle.

Is this a good thing? I've gained about 2lbs in the past 4 or 5 days and I've been excercising every day and eating right. I can feel that I've gained muscle but it's getting me down a bit. I feel like I've been working for nothing. Anybody else had this happen to them?

You can't gain that much muscle that quick. You probably didn't gain fat either, certainly not if you are on a diet. It's probably water.

It will eventually stop it yeah, but water does have weight (1liter=~1kg), so if you drink a lot of it and step on a scale you will weigh more. Try weighing yourself in the mornings

Water retention can happen for many reasons, everything from too much salt to time-of-the-month to using your muscles when working out- this causes them to take on water while they circulate (I'm sure theres a spcific term for this!) and they swell. This gives them the 'pumped' look guys tend to go for, if only all of them knew it was just water!! :smilielol5:

I don't know how things work in regards to green tea and water retention, I don't think anything but diruetics reduce water retention- which then makes you thirsty and in the long term you drink more and gain more water.....its just sensible to keep everything in moderation. Caffiene is a natural diuretic so be careful just how much you drink, the last thing you want is your body to become reliant on it to keep water retention away- what would be better is if your body did that for itself. One or two cups a day wouldn't hurt though I'm sure, Maybe to a wiki search on water retention, see if you can help yourself but things like lying with your feel above your chest (eg stretched out on a sofa so your legs are on the arm, your head and chest are on the seats- technically head below ankles) this then means you can drain the lymph glands in your ankles. You do need to lie there for some time though! Best done in the evening.

If its not water (eg things get worse or do not change over the next few weeks) then maybe look at your diet, check your eating enough, drinking enough non caffienated drinks and exercising properly but give it a bit more of a chance first. Good luck.

Thankyou very much for the responses guys. :) I'm going to leave weighing myself for a while, and just keep excercising, then if I gain weight I know it can't possibly be fat or anything. Water retention is terribly annoying. (N)

Yeah do not weigh yourself too often because it will cut out the excitement of finding out if you are actually losing weight.
