It's working so far - would love some advice and encouragement to keep me going!

I thought that keeping a diary would be a great way of keeping me on track with my new diet and exercise plan!

I am 28 years old and 5ft 4 - I am currently 137lbs and have lost around 5lbs in the last couple of months.

I moved house recently with my bf to a new city. We decided to join the gym and I decided to start watching my calorie intake too.

What is working for me so far is going to the gym and burning between 250-350 calories about 5 days a week doing various forms of exercise such as running, swimming or cycling. I am making sure that I have regular meals, only snack when I am within my calorie limit, drink a lot of water and only drink alcohol at the weekends. I make sure that I enjoy my meals and feel full after them but they are under 400 calories.

I would like to lose around a pound every week so I worked out the amount of calories I burn per day at my desk job (around 1700) and I try to eat around 1500 calories per day (this can be slightly more or less depending on the amount of exercise I have done that day).

At the weekends I am more relaxed about it, but I still watch what I eat to some extent.

In the mornings, I have a big bowl of cheerios with skimmed milk and a banana. For lunch its usually some kind of salad or homemade soup. Evening meals vary but I usually get a fresh ready meal from the supermarket that is under 400 cals. After dinner, if I am feeling peckish, I work out how many calories I have eaten that day and perhaps allow myself some chocolate or crisps.

My motivation is still ok, but I've found myself dreading going to the gym sometimes, even though I am ok once I'm there.

Any tips, advice or encouragement would be great! It would be good to know if I am doing this the right way.

First of all, welcome to the forums! Congratulations on deciding to lose weight :D

My recommendation is to aim for Whole foods. Eating a lot of whole grain, unprocessed meats, and fresh fruits and vegetables will optimize your weight loss. Secondly, I'm not sure how much a 5ft 4 female should weigh, but you should do proper research and make a goal weight for yourself. That way you will always find motivations during your weight loss journey.

Good luck!

Thanks for the advice!

I'm a bit wary of setting a goal weight because I don't know how I will look when the weight comes off and where it comes off from - I have quite a big bum, hips and chest, and I hate my arms - but I have a small waist and don't want to lose my curves completely. I am actually the top end of a healthy BMI too. I am a size 12-14 at the moment (UK sizes) and I would like to be an 8-10. So maybe size rather than weight would be a good goal.

Its morning one of my diary! I've just had my cereal and banana and am heating up some homemade chicken and sweetcorn soup to take into work with me for my lunch. I'll take an apple and a large bottle of water which I will refill a few times during the day. I'm planning on hitting the gym tonight too. My bf is going to meet me there so we usually get competitive which is good for motivation. I'll aim for burning 400 cals - will check back in later to see if I've done it!

Ok, so its 9pm

Today I have eaten - I bowl of cereal and a glass of milk for breakfast ( I would normally have a banana too but my bf ate the last one) - 226 cals, bowl of chicken and sweetcorn soup (homemade) and an apple for lunch - 242 cals and a supermarket bought king prawn linguine - 323 cals. I didn't snack and only drank green tea and water. So that is only 791 cals so far. I am about to have a couple of glasses of wine and some chocolates to make up the difference. Probably not the healthiest of days, but I couldn't sustain the diet without a few treats every now and then! I also burned over 400 calories at the gym today.

Also - I got on the scales and I have lost another pound from this time last week so am now 136lb.

So todays challenge is that I am working from home - means that I am more likely to snack! Its pretty cold so I've decided to go with a breakfast that will warm me up - one slice of white toast, a poached egg and a small pot of baked beans and a cup of green tea. This should keep me feeling full and satisfied until lunchtime today. I'll be going to the gym again tonight - slightly lower goal of 300 cals today. I'll also stay away from alcohol tonight after breaking my 'no alcohol midweek' rule last night. I did at least stay within my calorie limits!
