So when the weather turns cold and one of your favorite ways to exercise is walking, as it is for me what do you think of a walking video? Do you think they would be just as effective? I had worked up to about 2 miles every other day, except for the last few weeks I haven't done any.

Just a note, I am just beginning to get back into an exercise and diet program. Still trying to come up with a plan. Do you think I'm stalling?? Could be.

Cold doesn't stop me -I will still go outside and walk...

Gloves, ear muffs, scarf.. it's all good...

ice will slow me down a little but not that much...

The exercise that works is the one you will do regularly -I would rather poke my eyes out than use a fitness dvd - i find them all boring and the chirpy instructors with their you can do it (think denise austin's annoying voice) grating.. . I won't do them -I'd much rather be outside...

if you find a dvd that you wil luse regularly and it gets your heart rate up... (don't focus on sweating focus on your heart rate or rate of perceived exertion - google it :D then it will be effective.

Also do body weight exercises as well - or any type of regular strength training

I don't have the option to get outside at the times that suit me for my exercise all the time. When my daughter is having her nap I do dance dvds, yoga and pilates.

I find dance dvds work really well for my body and I find them challenging and fun.

thanks

You always have a workout machine ready to go, whether you can go outside or not: Its your body, and just using some imagination with things around the house (assuming no gym at home).

If you can't go outside cause' its too cold, and you have scheduled training day: IMPROVISE--and---ADAPT.

If needs to be intense: Setup a "body weight" routine in a circuit fashion, where you go from one body weight exercise to other with little rest. Grab a pair of milk jugs filled with water, and do walking lunges, etc, etc, with the ideas.

I also wrote another post on this topic here:

A long time ago, I didn't have a dip station, like I do now, or weights. But I had spare tires in the garage, and a cloths rack in the rear of car (mop handles weren't supporting my weight and were breaking). They telescoped out, and came a part and were made of steel---perfect. So, instead of mop handles I used this instead. And, I pressed tires over head, and did exercises.

Where there is a will......there is way.

Best wishes to you,

Chillen

I have several new pics, from October 2008, I will post

I will dig up one of my old Fitness Forum posts, on what I did, how I did it, when I did it (and add other information missing from it), in the event--some of the content will assist you or another forum member.

One thing I can tell you, it simply was not sit ups. Sit ups or any "direct" ab core work, were extremely low in the hierarchy if I had to attach an importance meter to my "overall" exercise program that I performed.

However, what help me the absolute most (without question), is grappling with my diet according to what I liked, disliked, and working with my strengths and weaknesses. And, learning what type of foods (assisted to reduce cravings, and the feeling of fullness), what foods effected blood glucose (and kept them more stable-thus attempting to maintain a steady stream of energy, and control cravings), and maintaining a consistent fitness program and--attacking progression very aggressively in my full body program--that expended a lot of energy.

In the journey, I learned a lot of things about myself, and 2 of them are: 1. While I was high in body fat, I could just create a calorie deficit, and lose weight (and it simply didn't matter what I ate, nor when I ate it, 2. However, when body fat became low, (but not low enough for my personal satisfaction), I had to change my diet, and pull my will-power from my boot-straps, suck it up, and enter a diet, that (for me) was very tough, but I did it and was successful. In addition, I set a plan of action (after I was done) to maintain the hard work I had previously performed.

Honestly, I can not make an accurate assessment (opinion), without actually seeing the problem you are identifying; therefore, until I actually see what you are talking about I am going to refrain from comment--for now. However, be patient apply the correct diet for you, and keep exercising, and it has no choice--but to at least improve. So if you are not against posting a pic, I would then be able to be more accurate in an "honest" opinion.

Thank you for your comments.

I am 47 now, by the way ;)

I will make the post and embed the pics, later today.....

Wish you well with your fitness goals,

Chillen

When i was walking and didnt belong to a gym and it was raining or cold i would just drive to the local mall (only 10 minutes away) and walk around the inside few times. I was surprised because i started seeing the same people every day. Only hard part was walking by the movie theatre. The popcorn smell was a killer. :drool5:

Being on a low-carb diet, and my wife getting the bright idea to make her famous Christmas chocolate cookies (as in last year), is an absolute killer. The aroma alone, will put one in convulsions.

But, I do not take any, one has no idea, how strong my desire to achieve something is. What's weird, and works for me, is getting a few and putting them on a plate, and giving them to one of the family, and watching them eat it......I get a strange satisfaction from that....., lol. :willy_nilly: Whatever. :hurray:

Living with annoyances when changing a life style (and on a certain diet to solicit a type of goal one wants) is just simply a fact of life, and we have to deal with it. And, no matter how many times a person falls off the wagon, this fact will always be the same truth, and the only thing that needs changed, is "Choice".

I will post what I promised, later today.

Have a great day everyone!

Thanks. Everything that you said makes sense....I'm thinking the deficit with the calories would be best at first....then maybe i can progress to a stricter diet...i'm thinking too strict at first will discourage me but something gradual will be a more reasonable goal for myself...and i've been thinking of posting the pics but i just can't find the guts to mash submit..lol...i mean we are a fitness family but i'm not quite ready for an unveiling:smilielol5:....but i do know it's something that definitely needs help but the advice that you gave about my diet and consistent exercise is very helpful...

Thanks again,

Barb

One thing at a time

Only you can answer if you are stalling or not! First things first don't look at the changes you want as a diet and exercise plan. Look at it as a lifestyle change. You need to first figure out how many calories you need to consume everyday and then subtract 500 from that. That your nutrition play, now when it comes to exercise....do what feels comfortable for you. Make sure you do it for a minimum of 5 days a week and 30 minutes. Remember, if you can't and won't stick to it. it ain't a plan!

Below maybe off topic keeping just incase., realy post below

The way I think of it. I love 3 foods like no other

spicy chiken sandwiche from wendus

nike and other brands make clothes specifically for winter/rain and such running. Look into it. also read up, you do noit want to dress too warm. You build up heat when exercising and you dno not want to sweat overly much..

Good luck, dont let the weather give you an escuse to stio!

Thanks to everyone for the great input. I find it very informative and amusing to get feedback from you all. Plus I feel I am motivated to get started back into my walking routine again.
