Greetings! I am 50 years old and starting my life completely over. After 27 years and 2 beautiful, wonderful children my husband left me for a coworker. After the grief and fear subsided, I realized that I had completely lost myself in that marriage and always put myself last. Because of that my weight had creeped up over the years and I was FAT!

My kids were both in college and well on their way to being on their own. I was alone and decided to start living for ME! I sold that big house and moved into a new condo completely decorated according to my own taste. I started Nutrisystem and started to pursue personal interests of all kinds. While I was getting a life I managed to lose 40 pounds of unhealthy fat with Nutrisystem (yes it does work!) even though I was in a cast most of the time due to a broken foot (I had some adventurous interests!).

I went to my 30 year class reunion and "re-met" a man that I would have never dated in high school. He was a bit of a bad boy (rebellious preacher's son!) and I had been a goody teacher's pet type. He was a widow (wife died tragically after a long, terminal illness) who had been faithful and true for the 24 years he had been married. Obviously, this was very attractive to someone like me! We really hit it off that night and 18 months later we were married. At 50 years old, I became a new bride!

My husband is a great cook and he loves to cook all our meals for us. That is also the problem ... I've gained 15 pounds! I discovered this when I went to the doctor for my yearly checkup. WAKE UP CALL!

I immediately came home, opened up my FitDay (that I should have never stopped doing) and recorded my food/drink for the day. Next, I ordered a treadmill (Pro Form Weightloss XP 620 from Sears). In this first week I have lost 3 pounds. The treadmill came yesterday and my husband is putting it together today. I am committing to walking a minimum of 30 minutes per day and working up to using the weight loss programs that come with the treadmill.

My goal is to blast off these 15 pounds and lose another 15-20 as that will bring me down to a "normal" weight for my size. My husband has been great as he loves me "as is" but will also encourage me in my quest to be better. I'm looking forward to finding friendship and support on this forum.

8/30/08 - I have been back on track for one week and have lost 3 pounds. My husband is putting my new treadmill together as we speak and I am committing to a minimum of 30 minutes per day and want to work up to the weightloss programs that come with the treadmill (from Sears: Pro Form Weightloss XP 620 Treadmill).

well done for getting back on track! good luck with your weight loss and hang in there - the treadmill will be a great weight loss tool!

Thanks

Thanks for the encouragement Tinkerbella. I am using FitDay to record my food/drinks. I must make time for this every day so that I won't get off track again. I am keeping my calories to 1500-1600 per day with no more than 50 fat grams. However, I won't beat myself up if I go to 1800 calories with 60 fat grams on weekends. A girls got to have some fun! :D

I found you! lol How are you liking your treadmill? Great that you use fitday....I got an account after reading about it in this forum but never really used it until yesterday. Glad I finally caught on. Anyway glad you made a journal, I'll be sure to come by and cheer you on :)

First day on the treadmill

It was HOT yesterday by the time we got it put together so my first day on the treadmill was today. My treadmill is in our garage. This morning I got up and jumped on the treadmill for an easy walk this morning. I went for 30 minutes at 2.5 miles per hour and burned 125 calories. I am going to do another 30 minutes or more tonight after it cools down. I love this treadmill as it shows your laps, time, calories, and distance. It is easy to see what your speed and incline are too.

I am also going to try to eat the "Big Breakfast" as many days as I can AND use the "Plant Fiber Diet" approach along with it. For my plant fiber I am going to use a combination of dark red kidney beans, a can of Ro-Tel for some zip and Metamucil (someone mentioned that it also has calcium and fights cholestrol ... at 50 I need both of these!).

I love using Fit Day because it really keeps me on track. It also shows what nutrients you are getting (or NOT getting) every day. I rarely get enough vitamin E or D so that helps me know what supplements I need to use. I don't like to take vitamins that I don't really need.

Thanks for all the encouragement. Good luck to you too!

Wow ... The Big Breakfast

I had my first "Big Breakfast" ... and it only totaled up to be 308 calories:

La Tortilla Low Carb Flour Tortilla 80 calories (and 12 grams of fiber!)
1/4 cup egg substitute, microwaved 53 calories
3 slices Oscar Mayer smoked ham 62 calories
1/4 cup 2% Mexican Cheese 88 calories
1 serving No Sugar Peaches 25 calories

I don't know if I can eat this much every morning as I normally eat Kashi Go Lean Crunch and the peaches (or other fruit) with skim milk. The calorie count is almost the same as the Big Breakfast.

I can see how this would help you lose weight as you are REALLY filled up after this! It is almost lunch time and I am NOT hungry.

I'm jealous, I went to my local grocery store to get the low carb tortillas today and there were none! I think they stopped carrying them  Gonna have to look around to find out if I can get them without ordering online. Anyway glad you're liking your treadmill, looks like you're off to a great start.

Check out La Tortilla Factory's website

Hello Douknowjello,

Google La Tortilla Factory's website. At the top of the website you will see "Store Locator". Click on that and you can choose a product and put in your zip code. Hopefully they will be in a store near you! It is hard to believe those wraps only have 80 calories and 12 grams of fiber ... they taste great! I like them a lot better than the Flat Out brand.

Good luck on your own quest. It looks like you have made a great start!:waving:

Hey just thought I'd swing by and say hi :) Oh and I found some tortillas just by chance at another store the other day but if I don't like them I'll do what you said and find the tortilla factory ones. I noticed you haven't been on in a few days so hope everything is ok. Hopefully you're just busy having fun with your sweetie and not overloaded with work, lol. Talk to you soon, Lisa

Hi Lisa

I hope you like the tortillas that you found. I have been walking every day and keeping my calories in check (around 1500-1600 per day) and watching the politic circus on TV. 7 pounds are gone! Together we can make this work for us. Good luck!

Today I splurged and had 3 wonderful crunchy tacos from Taco Bell. I still stayed around 1800 calories today so I am not too worried about it. However, my fat grams for the day were around 80!!! FitDay really keeps you see where you "go wrong". I am exploring a different supplement to try. As I am 50 years old, I am interested in being healthy and staying as young as possible. I found one that incorporates a lot of "super foods" that help detoxify your body and infuse your body with anti-oxidents and nutrients that will help your skin. A side effect is that it may help with weight loss too. I sure hope so! If you are interested, please send me a PM.

Hey, I hadn't even read this post but guess what I ate today :X 3 tacos from taco bell, lol. All I've had besides that was a slimfast shake this morning cuz I went straight from work to class and had no time. And food that makes your skin look good? I'm interested :D

Checking In

Well, I'm down 8 pounds as of today. I had my yearly check up and confirmed it on the Doc's scale (you know ... the kind that you are sure is weighing you at least 10 pounds more than you think you weigh!!!). The Doc is pleased that I have lost this weight as my cholestral is a little elevated. I have to have the Vampire take more blood in 3 months to see if it has improved. So far I have only had a little over 1000 calories which means I have another 500 calories to play with tonight. Will it be another sandwich and some watermelon? Maybe some baked apples with oatmeal crust (tastes great and is actually good for me!). HMMM I'm getting hungry!

Baked Apples

This is so easy it is a shame I don't have this more often!

JJ's Baked Apples

1 small apple cored, chopped
1 bag Weight Control Quaker Oatmeal Cinnamon Flavor
1/2 cup water
Splenda
Cinnamon
Dry Butter Substitute such as Molly McButter or Butter Buds

Place chopped apple in microwave safe bowl. Sprinkle lightly with Splenda, Dry Butter Substitute and Cinnamon. Spread dry oatmeal over top of apples. Pour water evenly over oatmeal. Sprinkle lightly with Splenda, Dry Butter Substitute and Cinnamon. Put on a lid and microwave for 3 minutes. Let set for one minute. Stir and then ENJOY!

It tastes decadent but is actually good for you. It fills you up and satisfies a
sweet tooth.

Doctor's Appt.

I went to the doctor for my yearly check up. I am in perfect health except that my triglycerides were a little high. Hopefully my new excercise routine will help. Tonight I tried out the "Weight Loss" mode (which I am re-naming the "Kill Me Now" Mode). It suggested that I start with a 20 minute routine that would expend about 150 calories. I felt great so I upped it to 30 minutes and 250 calories. BIG MISTAKE! It started out good (slow) and then built up to a brisk walk at 4 miles per hour. Hard, but doable for a while. But then ... I heard the Beep Beep Beep and it shot up to 5 miles an hour ... a hard run for me. I kept this up for a few minutes (to my amazement) and then realized that my bad knee and last year's broken foot were starting to hurt. I only made it through 20 minutes at that point and just decided to turn it off for the night. Tomorrow .... back to my old routine of just walking on an incline.
