Is your gym too sexy? BYU students think so...

Morning all,

This one, for me, takes the cake. I blogged about it here:

It begins:

..…. Some students say health club showing pornography

Some college students in Utah County are calling some music videos pornographic, and they are trying to get a health club to take them off its screen….

And I love one of their requests to the management:

Install blinds on the aerobics room to block the dancing, which is very provocative.

Amazing. Simply amazing.

Enjoy,

Barbara

BYU isn't exactly a bastion of liberalish mindsets...

I get perturbed that my gym has the television turned to idiotic reality tv :)

they're anti -pornography -i'm anti stupidity :)

....well, it is a Mormon private school.

The thing is, BYU is a big university from what I know of it, and a school of its size and stature should have its own gym. Marshall is the second biggest school in WV besides WVU, and it has two! If they're that bothered, they need to go to the school gym which I'm sure is set up to accomidate to Mormon beliefs.

The byu honor code is a rather interesting one - but it's their honor code -what gives them the right to impose iton someone else?

Be honest Observe Dress and Grooming Standards
Obey the law and all campus policies Participate regularly in church services
Live a chaste and virtuous life
Use clean language
Respect others
Abstain from alcoholic beverages, tobacco, tea, coffee, and substance abuse
Encourage others in their commitment to comply with the Honor Code

I wouldn't have lasted 15 minutes...

NO COFFEE??? the language thing is bad enough but NO COFFEE??

I hadn't read the entire article - the fact they're bitching abut a gold's gym is pretty sad.. don't like it - don't go...

BYU i thought had a pretty decent athletic program -they must have a gym or two on campus..

Orem, Provo groups demanding changes at 2 gyms

Deseret Morning News
PROVO — String bikinis, leather bras and skin.
It's all part of the video programming Gold's Gym offers its Utah County members, but nearly a thousand local community members — led by five student-run anti-pornography organizations — want to see the gym's Provo and Orem sports clubs cleaned up.

After submitting a lengthy public petition, presidents of various clubs from Brigham Young University, Utah Valley State College and the community voiced strong concerns to the gyms' director of operations, Kirk Livingstone, in a two-hour meeting Wednesday night.

They are demanding that the gyms get rid of R-rated or sexually explicit PG-13 movies and install blinds on aerobic room windows to block views of provocative dancing.

Some of the club's rap videos like "Shake Your Money Maker" were dubbed pornographic, and they said the lyrics were just as offending.

"I could read you some of the lyrics from these videos (played at the gyms) but it would be too embarrassing for both of us," said Jesse Yaffe, 30, a spokesman for the groups.

Some group members who were hoping for immediate results were discouraged when no definite agreements were reached, but Livingstone said he needed time to consider the complaints.

"We're committed to doing what's right for the community and our members," he said after the meeting. "I can't tell the chances of us changing but I will say we are not unwilling to change the programming."

Livingstone ruled out the request to install blinds but said he would seriously look into a way of altering the kind of music that is played.

While the gym franchise considers the issues, critics said the meeting was just a start in their drive.

According to Yaffe, the groups are ready to protest at the Provo and Orem gyms every Saturday until the TV programming is changed. "One hundred years if it takes that long," Yaffe said.

the supreme court couldn't define pornography -nice to see that the students of BYU are able to :D

A long time ago on MTV's Real World: New Orleans, this girl from BYU got expelled because while being on the show she lived in the same building as boys!

I really have no problem with honor codes - people should know what they are getting into when they sign them - going to BYU is a choice - ok maybe not totally for some but it's still a choice... and when you make that choice they abide by the rules.. Expel her - if it violates thehonor code she should have known better :D

it's when other people try to push their religious values onto someone else that I draw the line...

I thoroughly appreciate the showing of music video channels in my gym... watching Beyonce and J-Lo leap about in their hotpants guilts me into working harder :D what's inspiring about footage where everyone's in baggy swearshirts? :p

Forgive me for sounding ignorant, but shouldn't one go to the gym to work out as opposed to watching tv???

Inquiring minds wanna know!:conehead:

If the footage isn't to your liking don't look at it. :D

my gym the televisions are small so it's easy to ignore them -

what i find irritating is the blaring (c)rap or hiphop noise that's played - my ipod cannot drown it out it's so loud...

but it's not worth complaining about.. at least to the management...

My gym - sexy no, too expensive yes. And, I would love to work at that school. The kids must be angels!!!!

I think the article is quite amusing though. It is amazing how easily people get offended these days. Too funny!

Dont like it dont look at it!

Umm are you talking about the on campus gym or the gold's gym that ton's of the BYU students go to. I say if you don't like it, don't look at it...any good man whose trying to keep his thoughts clean or any women whose bothered by it would. You simply can't CONTROL your surroundings.

While this isn't entirely off topic, it's not exactly on topic either.
Did you guys see any Miss America footage from Saturday night?
The girl from Utah was wearing a one-piece swimsuit while all
the other girls were bikini-clad. Duh, Mormon. How is prancing
around in a tight piece of spandex that much different from prancing
around in two pieces of tight spandex?

Also, my gym is soooo unsexy. It's a YMCA. Lots of middle-aged
moms and pudgy dads. It's especially not very sexy at 5:20am. I'm
sure younger people populate the gym in the evenings between 6pm-
10pm.

I guess I would be one of those pudgy dads. You would not see me, however. Our gym has a lower level where the serious people go. Down there, no spandex, no ipods, no music, just the occasional clanking of weights and every so often a WHOO HAAA!! followed by some weight crashing. That's the way I like a gym.

That is embarrassing, but I actually went to BYU (and I still live in Utah). The school does have a large gym, but most students opt to go to Gold's or 24-hour gym as the rules at the RB (BYU's gym) are rather silly. For instance, you have to wear the shirts they give you if you want to work out.

It seems the people here just love to complain about such issues. I still remember when I was sent home because my shirt was quarter sleeve. It's pathetic.

And Utah is not 88% LDS. Please don't spread such misinformation. :p

It's at about 62.4% as of 2004. Probably a couple of percentages lower now.

I'm from Utah too, and still live there... I didn't go to BYU, though. I agree with the poster above who said that people here just love to complain complain complain about the stupidest shit you could even imagine. I guess I am just more used to it because I've lived here all my life.

CurvesAhead only meant that the percentage of Mormons in Utah County was at 88%. That I think I might believe, being that Utah county is where BYU is located, and that Donny and Marie and the whole Osmond clan live down there as well.

Yes, Sam, you are correct Utah COUNTY is what I stated had an 88% Mormon/LDS population which can be seen in my original quote below. This figure came from the US Census Bureau.

Mormon/LDS...88% of Utah County population.

'nuff said.
