Is the CSCS certification specifically for training athletes?

I have my bachelor's in exercise science and am looking to get my PT certification. I have been told that the CSCS is the gold standard in the strength and conditioning world from professors and other personal trainers. With the CSCS credential can I also work in a one on one setting in a gym or is it specifically for training the athlete? I would imagine that it would be ok, but just thought I'd get some feedback before I commit to taking this test. Also, how much time (on avg) should one (with an exercise science base) allot for preparing for this test? Thanks a lot!

CSCS is one of the best out there. You can most certainly work as a PT with a CSCS. Go to their site and take their practice tests and see how you faire. Also, order the CSCS text and study materials. Often a certifying board is a lot less about what you know and more about if you know how they want you to answer the questions.

It's more geared towards preparing you to train individuals in an athletic setting, but you will be able to train one-on-one in a gym setting as well.

As far as preparation, I'm sure it varies from individual to individual. I studied for about 3-4 months before taking it and passed with flying colors. I suppose more than enough time is better than not enough time.

Good luck!
