Is my weight gain the result of building muscle?

Hi,

I couldn't decide whether this was more suited to this forum or the Weight Training forum, apologies if I made the wrong choice!

Basically, I've always been naturally thin, but I've never been toned. I'm 5'8 and at my highest weight I was just under 10st, then I started eating a little less and dropped to 9st over the course of a year or so. I wasn't even trying to lose weight, my eating habits just changed and that's the result of them.

Then, a couple of months ago, I decided to start going to the gym and working out more frequently to tone my body up. I started doing Jillian Michaels' 30 Day Shred, but I only used 1kg hand weights. I also went to the gym a couple of times a week and did about 30 minutes running, maybe some rowing or cross-trainer, and ab exercises.

I've been continuing these workouts for the last two months. More recently I've been doing Jillian Michaels' "Banish Fat Boost Metabolism" and "No More Trouble Zone" workouts (one of which involves weight training, and again I still only use 1kg weights). At the gym I do 40 minutes to an hour straight running (I'm training for a 10k in May).

However, in the last 2 months I've shot up from 9st to 9st 9lbs. To be honest, I haven't been changing my eating habits and I still eat more junk than I should. But I have no idea whether these extra 9lbs are just from building muscle (since I don't see how I could have built quite that much with my puny little weights) or what?

Thanks in advance for replies :D

Are you male or female?

Just being more active might be making you eat a little more and hopefully some of that is being stored as muscle. Looking in mirror will give you the best indication as we won't be able to tell without pics

Are your pants any tighter? Have you moved up a notch on your belt? Your clothes, and as mentioned above, your mirror, are the true indicators.

I could care less whether I weighed 150 lbs or 250 lbs, as long as I looked and felt good.

If your weight training you shouldn't rely on a scale to determine if your overweight, just look in a mirror and hopefully you can judge if your overweight, flabby or just fine.
