Is it True?

Hi, im 15 years old, 5 foot 10, 145 pounds, and i just recently started weight lifting. so far i can bench press 80 lbs for 3 sets of 10 reps, yet there are ppl in my grade that claim they bench press 200 lbs max! there is one guy who weighs 125 lbs, yet cna max bench press 195. i dont really know if i should believe these ppl or what... my dad says that these ppl, if they are saying the truth, are really hurting their bodies by lifting such heavy weights. For god sakes, i can only bench press 80 lbs even though adults and trainers have told me that my body is teh ideal body for weight lifting and bodybuilding. So, i guess my real question is, is it true what these ppl in my high school are claiming, or should i turn a blind eye to what they say and just focus on making myself stronger?

blind eye. And don't fall into the hype, dead lifts and squats will work the spots teh girls love.

If you worked out hard and consistently for a full year and dieted then by the time you were 16 you could probably be near double what you are benching now... so yeah, it's possible for people your age to be benching 200+, but they will have to have lifted quite a bit.

However, unless you know that they work real hard lifting weights very consistently, and have done this for a long time, then I wouldn't believe it without seeing it with my own eyes.

Yes your main focus should not be competing with others; you SHOULD be doing it for yourself. With that said, when I was 15 I could bench around 230. Those kids have probably been at it for a while, or they're just full of it, highschoolers do anything to protect ego lol, but yes it is possible.

I just re-read your post and musta missed it.......if you can do 80 for 3x10 then your max is NOT 80....try upping the weight and doing different sets if you want to gain more strength.

With this... def talk to EliteMarine...the kids a beast.

I'm 16 and max out at 160 (4 months ago), but regularly bench 135. I haven't been working my chest for too long, so it's def possible for others to bench more.

I'm with CrowTR 100%. It might be BS, might not be...just come to my school :p you'll hear all sorts of things they claim they're able to do.

80 is just your amount you use for s/r, maxing out is having the most weight you can handle, for 1 rep.

Don't worry about what they think. There just dumb if they have to lie to make themselves see strong.

The only thing you should worry about is yourself.

Exactly. I think theres a sig on here saying 'don't be better than anyone else, be better than what you used to be' or something like that.

Do it for yourself, and you'll be much happier.

in my weight lifting class they're are some kids who might be able to bench 200, but they're mostly the football players who work out and train all of the time with coaches so they're definitely always on the top of their game...im almost 16 and i can bench around 145 as my max, if you've seen any of my posts you can tell im not in the best of shape...but i try to get by, sry for gettin off topic...anyway yes some kids might be able to bench 200 but that would come from a lot of hard work, you will definitely be able to up your bench by a lot with a good eating plan (plenty of protein) and plenty of lifting, you'll be bench 200 easy in no time!

Are they lifting that much? Sure, but only one or two of them. What I have learnt from school is that if one kid says something impressive, others follow on. Maybe one guy worked out hard for a year and can do it, but I seriously doubt somebody weighing 120lbs could even attempt it. I don't bench press, so I wouldn't know how much I can do, but there aren't many people in my year/grade who are stronger than me, and I don't think that I could do 200.

Well, my friend whom is 14 years old said he can curl with one arm 25 pounds 50 times, I was a little skeptical on this and when he came to my house I handed him a dumbell that weighed 25 pounds and said here curl this 50 times and he curled it once and said "I really can do it I dont think im in the right position though" So he went on the floor, the couch, my bed and even tryed preacher curling it and he couldnt get it up one time. Haha it was actualy quit amusing watching him trying to do it cause he was turning red in embarrasment and trying hundreds of different positions and he wouldnt give up either I had to rip the dumbell from his hand before he hurt himself lol. But yeah people always lie about how much they can bench and stuff and most likely if they have very little muscle they probaly cant even bench over 70.

Are they talkin free weights, or machines? cuz machines ALWAYS give you mechanical advantages.

I can curl 40lb dumbbells if I throw em around like I'm having a seizure. If I use strict form and don't cheat one bit, that drops me down 8-10lbs on working weight.

guys, esp. teenage boys, love to gloat and will exaggerate greatly. if you ain't seen em do it yerself, don't believe it.

I'm about 150 lbs, 16, 5'10, and can only lift 155 lbs, or something close to that.

Some people are naturally "strong", I've always been able to lift more than other people, but used to be the "small kid", I weighed about 125lbs about a year ago...
