is it possible to...

Not really. It's like this, when you cut - you cut out food intake so your body burns more than is coming in, when you bulk - you eat more that your body can burn so it has something to build from.

This is not too say that you won't still have a great look, they will more than likely be less extraordinary.

It's possible but you'd have to maintain a VERY delicate balance. You'd have to get a lot of protein and almost no fat or carbs (both of which you'd need for your workouts unless you want to burn muscle instead), which would basically amount to living off of supplementation -- not necessarily the best idea.

The more common pattern is bulk, then cut, bulk, then cut (rinse, repeat). After long enough, unless you're a competition bodybuilder, you'll reach a mass that's satisfactory and it will come down to maintenance.

Get TONS of protein and a ton of calories (2.5k - 4k a day depending on your body type) so that you can really push those workouts. Then, it's a matter of mixing up low and high intensity workouts to gain size and break past barriers, respectively.

Someone else might be able to give you a more detailed answer as it's never been a big part of my fitness goals.

when bulking you tend to go 1,000 calories a day MORE than what you need. This keeps the body in a growing state...which means you'll add some fat, and some muscle.
A general guildline is 1.5g of protein per pound of body mass, and 2.5-3g of carbs per pound of body mass.
make sure you get plenty of fiber and healthy fats too. dipping too low on fat calories will stunt testosterone production, and you need that to pack on weight and minimize fat gain.

the idea is to keep your cuts as short as possible. meaning not to bulk for 4 months and then have to cut excess fat gain for 6 months.

with experience, you'll see just how far you can go with your bulk and how much time you need to get your cuts back.

with bigger muscles of course :)

i dont want to get all disgustingly big and all, i just want want a body with sex appeal (ex:Brad Pitts body) do i still need to bulk? plus do u eat like that everyday or just after workouts?

just dont overdo it. with the internet, we now have new terms like "dirty bulk", "clean bulk", "clean eating", whatever

like i posted earlier, the idea is to keep your cuts as short as possible. so that would mean you dont go about gaining so much fat when you're trying to gain size. for the majority of us we gain some fat when we try to get bigger. those who stress over it too much can hold back their gains.

this is a lifestyle. its a 24/7 commitment. those who go just for the looks or to lose weight before the next reunion, cruise, date, marriage, etc usually dont stick with it and just get in everyones way. there are some who do fall in love with this and stick with it but they are few and far between. :(

im not gonna just quit working out when i get the body i want i just want to get the body i want and then maybe strenght train or maybe continue a little more but the question is: am i gonna have to bulk to get like a brad pitt look?

no, you dont have to "bulk". but you will have take in more calories and work your body harder to go further and to get better.

well ive noticed today and yesterday that i have made some gains in my abs (pretty good gains since ive advanced the most in them and in general are the strongest muscle ive "made") arms, and legs. ive been going to the gym since October 2004. i guess ive gained a little on my chest but that might be because i didnt start really working out my chest until Febuary. am i going in the right direction?

my suggestion is work everything out evenly!! it will prevent you from having to play catch up in the future; it will also help you steer clear of injuries..

You can gain pure muscle only... But, a friend of mine who is an amatuer bodybuilder tells me that it is VERY hard to do. And, you can only expect to gain 5 lbs of muscle per YEAR!

Instead, follow what the others have said... Bulk up, and then cut. It would be much quicker and easier than the other way.

ok i think i might have been bulking without knowing it cause i got on the scale and i weigh 5 pounds more since the last time ive gotton on the scale and im pretty sure ive made some gains.

by the way from what rip said about pure muscle. if thats pure muscle then what kind of muscle is bulked muscle. just curious.

what rip was saything was that if you tryed to gain muscle and lose fat at the same time you would only gain 5lbs of muscle a year.. but when you bulk you usually gain muscle & some fat, then when you cut you get rid of all of the fat you gained & keep the muscle. the bulk/cut cycle is very effective, and if you work hard you will definatly gain more than 5lbs ina year! its an ongoing cycle until you are satisfied w/your numbers and the way you look, then all you've got to do is maintain.

So would a 1 week bulking phase and a 2 week cutting phase rotation be effective?

um, a little longer than that. the average cycle is about 8 - 10 weeks, some people do longer. i personally bulk until my bf% gets to a certain point (~16), then begin to cut until it gets to another point.

i agree. personally for a bulk to be successful, i have to dig my teeth into it so to speak. i train in 8 week cycles so it would be 8 weeks, break then 8 more weeks. :)
