Many concerned parents often ask me “Is it OK to put my kid on a diet?” My answer is always a quick and firm “NO”. The word diet is defined as ‘A food regimen designed to promote weight loss in a person.’ To lose weight, keep it off and live a long healthy life an overall healthy lifestyle is essential.

you are cherry picking a definition of diet. Diet is more than restricting food for weight loss, that definition is a very narrow view of the whole.

According to the Dictionary "Diet" can be defined as

a : food and drink regularly provided or consumed
b : habitual nourishment
c : the kind and amount of food prescribed for a person or animal for a special reason

what you consider to be a diet is a small sub-section of C

Would I make dietary changes to a child's diet ? yes certainly if needed, there are many reasons to make diet changes in kids, that diet need not be the classic calorie restrictive diet an obese adult may use but it is still a diet. Many kids get placed on diets appropriate for a wide range of medical conditions or allergies, would you allow kids to eat in a way that is dangerous simply because you don't want to put a kid on a diet ? Would you allow a child to fill themselves with unhealthy food because you believe diets are wrong ?

Yes, it is okay. It's OK to stop giving your kid McDonald's every night.

Another of the biggest and most obvious differences that I see, from when I was a child..is the incredible amount of SODA and sweet drinks that our children are drinking..

The sodas now, served in restaurants, are BIG sodas, with free refills..many times over. And, these kids drink soda for breakfast, lunch and dinner..lots of it! And, in between meals, just because..they CAN. I am constantly amazed at the among of kids and grownups coming out of a fast food place, or a Quik Trip carrying QUART sized soft drinks..

Even the diet soft drinks are NOT good for you! With this kind of consumption of soda, even if kids ate smarter, and had more exercise..it wouldn't affect their weight..the soda is a killer.

The unlimited sweet snacks, the sodas, the salty stuff, chips, cookies..all of this stuff is pure garbage..BUT..it does taste good. Somehow, we must figure out a way to change the eating habits..and what our children eat.

It starts at home, with the parents. Please think about what you are feeding your kids..
