is it healthy?

Well first of all, except the 3 months when i was 18 years old i have never ever went to gym or did work out in my life. I m 22 years old and after i moved to US (which was 3 years ago), i started gaining weight and now here i am 5" 10' (1.79 m) 220 pounds (i was only 150 pounds when i came here). As you can imagine since i don't have a proper family life i don't get to eat healthy food, all i eat is fast food or microwaveable food. Anyways, this weight problem started to bother me very much i thought i could just give it a shot. I wanted to buy some sort of home fitness equipment which would help me not only loose weight but also build some muscles. I found The Max XP400 Weight System Weider (here is the )
But then my mother starts saying these kinds of things are not healthy and can even give me a heart attack. I m also smoking over a pack a day. I don't even walk, where i live in its over 105 degrees (41 celcius) and its very humid. I even tried walking 6 in the morning or after 10 pm at night but in both cases i couldnt stand the heat, so its so damn hot!!.Anyways i just want to know what i should do. is the equipment i found good for me? is what my mom thinks really true?I just dont know what to do.All i know is,being 220 pounds isnt me and i wanna get rid of it no matter what. I want to do this at home since its so hot outside and u cant even walk to your car. So my solution to my weight problem MUST be something i can do at home. but my main question is "are these things healthy?"I mean i do smoke and from personal reasons i will not quit smoking until i graduate university.i m a computer science student and programming is just so stressful and this is my solution and i know its a very bad decision but i will not quit it till next year so save your breath Thank you very much for yourtime.

PS Sorry for my English

First and foremost you have to change your diet to see ANY results. Eat 6 healthy meals a day and count those calories. Drink lots of water also. This machine is OK but the easiest way to shed pounds is to do running and weights. Smoking is going to hinder your progress so make sure you quit after graduation.

I don't speak from personal experience but i do speak from close to personal, my uncle is very similar (except i'm from the uk) but he has shed most of the weight he gained by buying a treadmill and because he was so fat he couldn't run he walked for 4 hours a day infront of the t.v. and also (i find this funny) playing catch with his kids ont he thing :p, everyday, it's worked for him, maybe you could do the same but he is 47 and his life is in jeopardy if he doesn't do it, so i'm sure he has a huge insentive

well i don't know UK but in US the cheapest treadmill is around $1500 and i cannot afford anything like that. I need someone to tell me if that equipment i found is good for my needs or not. I don't know what to do. The reason i can't walk or run isnt because of my weight, its because its very hot in here. I live in texas and humidty is above 80% most of the time.US isnt like UK(or anywhere else in europe). The roads weren't built for people to run or walk. Everyone has cars and you cannot buy even drinking water without your car. I have never ever seen anyone walking or running in the streets anywhere. In 90% of the roads there isn't even pavement. I'm from Europe too (i m just here for education) and i know it sounds stupid (at least it does to my family) but i just cannot run or walk outside (one of the main reasons why i miss my home country).
