Is diet pop good or bad for weight loss?

I have heard that it actually increases your chances of being overweight. But maybe that is not true for all people. I really would like to think it's not that bad because I like the taste of it. I was thinking that maybe it could help with weight loss. For example if you are craving something sweet, you could have a diet pop instead of something like candy. What do you think?

I still drink diet soda for a sugar crutch when I am really craving something sweet. I just really try to limit them because of all the sodium they are normally loaded with.

Diet pop or soda is worthless. Stop drinking it, theres no reason to drink pop anyway. The normal stuff has cups of sugar and can eat the rust or corrosion off of a car battery. Why would you even put that stuff into your body?

Its always amazing to see a "Large" gentlemen in public order some fast food garbage and a diet coke. Great choice, I can see the weight coming off as you slurp down that trash. PS when was the last time you seen your penis?.. oh right.

Diet sodas are continuously linked to over weight people. They do tend to be low in calories, however high in GI and low in nutrition. There are health concerns over their artificial sweeteners and other things such as the phosphorus and carbonation are concerns. Honestly, I do not recommend the consumption of these drinks whether your dieting or not. They are not healthy or a healthy alternative to anything other than sewer water, imo.

In a way its much like a number line. The closer you go left the worse. The more you go right (positive) the "healthier" you should be. ALL sodas move the body to the left (negative) direction.
When one is shooting for weight loss they generally are moving in the positive direction. Why dull that progression with unhealthy liquids?
If you must have them, though. Ensure you stay to one or less a day. Preferably no more than 5 a week.

Heart trouble from sodas?
Other studies have linked drinking soft drinks with risk factors for heart disease, but this study suggests that diet soft drinks sweetened with artificial sweeteners are just as likely to be linked as high calorie drinks sweetened with sugar.
The investigators also found that participants who drank one or more soft drinks a day, when compared to those that drank less, had a number of increased risk factors for metabolic syndrome, including:

31 per cent greater risk of developing new-onset obesity (defined as a body mass index or BMI of 30 kilograms per meter squared or higher).
30 per cent higher risk of developing an increased waist circumference.
25 per cent increased risk of developing high blood triglycerides or high fasting blood glucose.
32 per cent increased risk of having low HDL ("good" cholesterol).
A trend towards an increased risk of developing high blood pressure, but this was not statistically significant

They are fine for weight loss.

On my last successful weight loss program where I was losing 20lbs a month I drank as many of them as I wanted.

Still lost 5lbs a week.

Maybe it would've been 6lbs a week due to water weight if I had cut them out completely but eh for me its better than drinking bland old water.

All diet soft drinks do is keep a bit of water weight on ya but it will come off eventually on its own if you keep up your diet program regardless.

Also most of that garbage talking about soft drinks being able to melt rust off of metal as well as the sweeteners Aspartme and Splenda being dangerous has been debunked by snopes.com.

Diet pop, or regular pop for that matter is a significant source of LOW sodium. A can generally has about 5mg? So no worries about sodium in pop. Diet sodas as OK! They arent RECOMMENDED since they do not have any significant nuitritional value, but they aren't BAD for you either. Just kind of a "Not good, not bad" type thing......If you want diet pop with dinner, thats fine..water is better...but diet pop will not change your appearence nor your health.

They do give me the occasional headache. And they are addictive. But the thing I find really bad about them is that they replace water. I end up drinking too much pop, that's half my water intake for the day,. They fill me up so I can't fit ANY water in there.

I stopped drinking them due to the sodium, but Other than that, I don't see any major problems with them. Some people can't diet without them, and are addicted to the carbonation. You can lose weight and drink a buttload of them. I know that's a fact. Just keep the exercise going.

Like Dariqueen said, If I drink them, then I don't get enough water down.

I made a decision between coffee and soda. I chose coffee.

There is basically NO sodium in pop lol..as I mentioned above.

I just looked at a can of diet coke. It's got 35mg of sodium in it, which is about 1.5% of your DW. You'd have to drink 100 diet cokes in 1 day to just REACH your DW in sodium. I wouldnt worry about drinking diet sodas at all.

I've spent a lot of time worrying about this. There WAS a time when I quit soda completely. But now I drink kind of a lot of diet soda and the weight is still coming off. Blah blah they've been linked to cancer. What hasn't? I say it doesn't matter. I doubt they hinder weight loss enough to be a huge concern.
