Is 35KG of wieghts enough?

I recently saw an offer for a barbell/dumbbell set with a total weight of 35KG. The weights are interchangeable.

I'm considering purchasing it because it's presently £29.99 in Argos; down from £39.99.

My only concern is that 35KG won't be enough. I'm planning on weightlifting as a sideline to my regular aerobic exercise; I don't want to become a body-builder. Initially I plan on bulking-up a little bit but I certainly don't want to become huge.

Is 35KG enough? Thanks for any advice!

What's the weight breakdown to?

I'm guessing it's not an olympic bar - (which I think is 45lbs)

A standard bar weighs about 25lbs I believe -

So is it a bar set and weights a dumbbell set and weights or the combination..

A barbell is your best option because you can always buy more plates for it... dumbbells unless their adjustable - you're stuck with one weight and can outgrow them pretty quickly.

Enough is relative to the person - if you've not lifted before it's a good starting point but probably doesn't give you long term growth..

I think you're female - so you really don't have to worry about becoming big and bulky (if you're not female my apologies and i'll send you a lecherous wink :D )

That is a question that can't be answered.

How is anyone to know if it will be enough for you?

We don't know how strong you are.

The bottomline is, you must force the adaptation that hypertrophy is to occur. By force, I mean you must supply a reason for the muscle to respond in a way that makes it stronger and bigger. This is progressive overload.

If 20kg provides an overload for you, your body will respond (assuming your caloric state is aligned with such a response). You will be able to progressively overload the body up to the max weight you buy, which is 35kg. So in this instance, you will have room for 10kg of advancement.

I'm thinking about buying. It really is all I can afford at the moment!

BTW, I'm male! Now where's that lecherous wink?

How do I know when I'm overloading?

As for my strength levels; My maximum is 30 curls with a 10lb dumbell. I could lift twice as much weight, or more, but not as many reps. I presently have 2X10lb dumbbells and this isn't enough for me (non-adjustable).

it's hard to tell from the ad - but is the set expandable?

otherwise it doesn't seem like yo'u'd be getting a lot of long term use out of it.

My weight set - I got at a used sporting goods store... that sells all second hand equipment... Or you might want to check the local classified for a used set of weights -the bar and weights you'll probably get more use out of than the dumbbells (but steve will know more about that i'm sure)

oh yeah and

WINK WINK WINK LEER :D

It's almost certainly expandable. I've had York before. I'm more interested to know if it's enough to get started. I'm not a total wimp and thus I'm a little concerned 35KG might not be enough.

*Leering wink returned*:reddevil:

Edit: I just found of the weights.

sounds like you got your answer with that review...

35Kg is probably a good starting point -but the expandability is really what you're going to want... and doesn't sound like that set will expand the way you want it to...

I'd think you'd be better off with either a curl bar or a standard bar and some weight plates that you could add when you've got some extra cash.
