Intro, goals and my journey!

Hello Forum,

I'll start with introducing myself and telling you why I want to lose weight. I'm an 18 year old male living in England. I enjoy it here, I've got friends, I go college daily and I get paid for sitting on my ass (I work on a forum). Although that 'job' isn't exactly the best for my weight loss program, I love what I do there and I'm committed to making my exercise and diet work around it. So, I basically want to lose weight because I am.. overweight - shocker, I know! But really, I weigh 244lbs (although in the morning the scales tell me 239?) :S Either way, it's too much.

So why the weight loss, and why now?

Well, I'm a yoyo dieter. I start, I stop, I start, I stop. However this time I'm really going for it. I feel my weight holds me back, for example, I won't go paintballing with my friends for fear of their suits not fitting me, or running around so much the visor fills with sweat! Horrible, yep. I bike around 15 miles on most days at a moderate intensity. I really enjoy biking, I see different things every day. I'm about 6 ft in height. I really don't want this to be a yoyo diet though, this time - I want to make it last! When I was 16 I wore size 34 jeans, even then I was told that was fat (although, looking at what my thin friends wear, that wasn't) - I gradually went up to 36 and I'm currently on 36. However, this isn't my true size. If I go to a shop, no 36 jeans will fit me. People tell me it's the brand. I'm not stupid and I wish people would be brutally honest with me, I'm sick of being told lies if anything, it's holding me back.

My motivation is thinking about fitting back into 36jeans (new 36 jeans!) and then after that, 34 jeans. God, I'd love for that day to come. My 18th birthday is also in about 7 days time, and my parents have bought me a new multigym (as my current one is broken) and that isn't cheap. It's around $500/£300 and therefore, I HAVE to use it as I'd feel so, so bad if I wasted their money.

May be posting each day the day after as I get in late sometimes.

Day 1 Weight: 245lb

I missed out a lot of days as I wasn't doing a diary when I started, the rest will have a corresponding date for more accurate results.

10th November 2011 - 243.32

Working out is getting boring, but my cross-trainer is breaking (I think) so I'm resorting to using the excercise bike. It's better as I like biking, but I don't find it fun still. I know excercise isn't meant to be fun but I find it hard to keep going staring at a garage door for 30minutes. It's not that much time and I should just keep going, but the boredom makes you feel weaker and thats

what makes you want to stop. I hope I carry on with it. I'd really like to lose weight. Hopefully 16stone (224 lb) for christmas, and long term - 34inch jeans. I think I can manage to not eat the crap food 'forever' but the exercise is getting a bit boring. When my weights come next wednesday, I will be doing weights, bike, nothing & repeat.

Didn't use any of my excercise equipment yesterday and didn't bike that far. I biked around 4miles I guess to pick a parcel up for my dad. I usually go on either another bike ride at the night time or use some of my equipment in my garage but I ended up cleaning the garage out to make room for the aforementioned gym equipment that should be coming next wednesday :D.

I know I said I wasn't going to weigh myself haha but the urge was too much! I promise I won't do it again after today, lol. So I go on my electric scales and they originally said 239.5 lb's, I got on them again and they said 243 lb and got on them again and it was somewhere in the middle of those 2! Well that really annoyed me so I got on my non-electric scales and tried a few times and the results stayed the same everytime, 110kg which is according to google 242.5lb's.

I feel it's going well, not currently having any 'cravings' for chocolate etc, junk food was never a treat for me, I ate when I was bored so I'm finding myself listening to my iPod a lot more than I used too which is a good thing. :)

I've also decided when I bike home from College, I will be taking a longer route than the one I take at the moment, looking on google my journey is around 2miles there and 2miles back - my new journey isn't much longer but according to google it is around 3.8miles back, meaning I will actually be doing 2miles there, 3.8miles back. :)

Just did 8.7miles on my exercise bike, it's telling me I lost 266calories so that's good for me :) I did 30 minutes on there, the first 10 minutes I listened to a pod cast whilst playing an iPhone game called orbital. I'd really reccomend it, it is so addictive and I've now got 6 friends playing it after seeing it on my iPhone haha! I managed to beat my highscore on that game, the next 10minutes I spent playing 'fruit ninja' - the game isn't as good so I switched over to 'cut the rope' which was pretty cool. Thank god for iTunes gift cards hey? So I'm feeling good, hopefully I'll get another workout in tonight and burn some more calories. :)

I'm off for a shower, :)

edit: just noticed my math doesn't add up, for the last 10minutes I switched to some Maroon 5 songs and just sang along. :)

So, went for another 9mile bike ride (on a real bike this time, not exercise bike) at around 8PM, not wanting to give up yet. :) I feel this diary thread is a key part of my motivation cause I'm doing it for you guys now, not just myself and with the community here being as awesome as it is, I don't want to leave and therefore I have to keep at my diet. :)

My scales first told me 236.6lbs, and to my surprise they stayed like that every time I stood on them (more than 5 times!) however I then switched to stone mode and back to lbs and it went up to 240lb everytime, I can't get it to go any higher than 240lbs, and I'd feel like a terrible cheater if I was to put 236.6lbs so, 240lbs it is. :) I'm going to buy some more expensive scales today and I really hate the inaccuracy of these, especially when I'm trying to write a diary about it!

Been town today during the day, my sister bought a pasty and ate it on the way home - damn it smelt so good.. x) Not much to report on today, did 8.5miles on my exercise bike and it's telling me I lost 267calories so that's good. :) Didn't end up buying the scales, decided just to use the manual ones I've got. When I say manual, I just need non-electric. The manual ones are always consistent with their results so hopefully that'll be great. I think I'm going to go for another 9 mile bike ride before my shower - I've got the energy and I didn't have enough time on the exercise bike (as I try to always only do 30minutes else I expect to do longer everyday if I do it once and then it gets really hard after awhile. Will most likely post again in 30mins when I'm back from my bike ride. Maybe not till tomorrow depending on what's on TV. :)

Went for the bike ride, took a longer route back too so may have been further than I mentioned before, not really sure of exact distance. :)

Definately buying new scales tomorrow on the way home from college, really can't put up with this 5lb difference anymore! Today was good, went college but forgot to take the long route home, woops! Didn't eat much yesterday but because of the low calorie intake I've changed my breakfast to a toasted bagel which is around 220calories. Also very sad that I can't drink beer - after seeing there is 220calories per pint anway! Not much more to say about today, spent 9am-4:30pm at college so nothing interesting happened. :(

(posted this a day late haha)

Bought some new scales costing $56 :) They also change slightly but rarely and only by about .5 of a lb so I'm really happy. This means I have officially lost 10lbs!!!!!! Yayyy, My new weights are coming tommorow so that'll be brilliant too. I only had college till 2:30 so in theory I should have spent all those free hours bikings or something, instead I only nike around 20miles all day. :( I feel a bit lazy for not doing extra with the extra hours but yeah, maybe tomorrow - I'm only in college till 10:30am so haha :)

Really glad that my weight has stayed the same as on my old scales I would have been worried about it going up 5lb's so that's definately a plus. I got no exercise done today as my new multigym came and I spent around 4hours (!!!) setting it up on my own. Damn those things are awkward :p Will be going on that tonight, and it comes with a beginners, intermediate and advanced programme and how many weeks to do each for so I'm hoping I can follow those and get somewhere. I've noticed though that since I stopped lifting weight a while back I can lift around 25kg less now, can't wait to get that back up! Been a good day, was hoping to get a lot of exercise done though (other than biking to and from college) as I finished college at 10:30am, but then I remembered I had to wait in for the multigym so it kind of got me stuck in the house.

Sorry I missed the 17th, I usually post the day after but it was my birthday. So today was my birthday, had a lot of drink (calories!!!) and a piece of cake. :( I had a great day and hopefully this won't affect anything too much. So far it's put on 2lb but I'm sticking to my diet now so hopefully we don't see any more gain. Been on my multigym, muscles hurt a bit haha, it's that good pain that lets you know you're doing it right though. :)

I really laughed when it told me I had lost weight! After ruining 2/3days in a row I was waiting for doom. I'm back on schedule now. Used my exercise bike today, biked about 7miles to college and back and about 8miles on the exercise bike. Haven't ate anything 'bad' today either, bought bottled water and some cough sweets which to my amazerment have lots of calories. I really hurt my throat though so was a necessity. Hope everyone else is doing good! :)

Very pleased with todays results. I biked about 20miles today, but I was starving ALL DAY!! no idea why, I had the same to eat as normal. Oh well, I can stick to the diet, I had enough energy so I think it's ok. As I don't think weights are as good as biking for burning calories, I've decided I will only do weights on Saturday and Sunday as I really want to lose as much as I can before Christmas. I still find the exercise bike in my garage painfully boring, but I think I burn the same if not more calories by biking IRL. IRL I have encouragement to go fast because I'm usually on main roads and if you go slow the traffic gets very annoyed with you :p I think I'll probably do more real biking however, with it being winter I can't predict whether there will be ice and I'd rather not do my current route during icy weather as the road already has a reputation for car crashes without ice!

Another weight loss! It's going to be a nuisance when it started becoming slow. :( I've been biking on my real bike and a long journey too! It's much more fun than sitting in my garage and you more of a workout I think from uphills, jumping up curbs etc! I'm really glad I'm sticking to this! :)

27 November - 228.4lbs

I feel like I'm losing the weight a little too fast, I thought I was being pushy when I expected 1lb a day. I hope I'm not going to pile loads back on because I lost it a little faster than I thought. Good news though! I'm 4lbs away from hitting my Christmas target which means I should easily have beaten it (by far) at christmas!!! I haven't tried the jeans I mentioned on yet because I have actually been trying them a couple of times over the past week. They can zip up now, but I'm not sure if that's because I think I'm thinner therefore I tried harder to zip them up.. they are still really tight on the legs so hopefully to get a realistic idea of if I do fit into a normal pair of 36jeans, my mum will be taking me to the clothes store next week (unknown to her :p).

Today was bloody tiring! We biked about 10miles away, walked another 3 and my friend got a flat tyre!! So, in the pitch black we walked 13miles home. GAHHHH, got college tomorrow too! Oh well, I expect to have the next week off after the first day because it's 'review week' which means you only go in if you have incomplete work and I'm one of the few in my college class who actually does their work on time. I'm currently awaiting the results on 2 pieces of work, 1 should be correct first time and the other teachers a bitch so will probly give me it back.. I really hate her x) I think she dislikes me cause I sent her a 'snobby' email once.

Feeling bad that I've only lost 0.2lbs in 3days. Was off college today and therefore I biked about 7miles in the morning and other 8miles at night. Hardly eaten because I don't think about it when I'm off college because there's no set times. x)

I'm just cutting out the crap as I searched online and there were thousands of diets and as a 'noob' I didn't know what was what so I thought why not just not eat rubbish! If you know any good ones that may be good I'd be more than glad to read into it.

Also, I downloaded 5.1days worth of podcasts which should last me past christmas as I only listen to them when I bike and when I workout in my garage which in total is no more than 1-1.5hrs a day. But I do feel that I need something visual, I tried my laptop in my garage but it doesn't go loud enough for me to hear it, hopefully the podcasts will be enough.

Thanks for the welcome, I thought by doing this with people and posting results I'd be more motivated to want to lose weight to share my stories with you guys and if all goes well, it'd be a great to look back on. :)

AWelcome to the forum.

I got bored too, it's partly why I've hit a slump myself...but you need to change things up sometimes. Like Crym said, it can really help if you have a way to watch a tv show or something while you're exercising.

Also, I wanted to point it. Generally it's better to weigh yourself before you exercise. When you work your muscles they absorb water, and stuff happens, and the scale can read differently than they should. The BEST time to weigh yourself is in the morning after you do your business ^^ without clothing too, for best results. That's what I do. I often weigh myself before bed, and then in the morning. There's usually a 2lb difference. You eat a lot of food during the day and it needs time to digest, and liquids too. After you sleep it ends up breaking down and all that, so, your weight will be much closer to what it really is.

DON'T obsess over the scale. Remember that when you eat/drink, it has weight too. Just relax and wait for your weekly weigh in. Numbers will go up and down through the week. It's okay to check once a day, but don't get upset if the scale says you've suddenly gained 5lb since the last day. Your body is constantly taking and removing ^^.

Diet is VERY important. Let us know what your plan is. Some of us like to count calories, others like to simply change what they eat and eliminate bad things. Drink lots of water! It's okay to cheat once a week if you find yourself struggling, but ONLY once a week. Just stick to it, keep your chin up. You're young. You have the rest of your life to make the change for a better life style. This isn't a race :). The worst thing you can do is give up. Always, always, always get back up even if you have a bad day, or a bad week, even a bad month. Start over, and remember why you're doing this.

Hi, thanks for the great words. :) To answer your question, I will just be taking the bad foods such as chocolate, soda, biscuits etc out of my diet and replacing with fruit (maybe sugar free jelly as it has only 3calories per tub?!)

Also I may just weigh myself once per week then and post the weight once a week. It'll probably be good to see bigger changes as like you say it goes up, sometimes it doesn't change even though it feels like you've worked really hard. x)

Thanks for the link :O

I don't think I get more than 2k calories :S

For the past week it's been:

Apple for breakfast sometimes a banana

Ham sandwich for dinner (2bread, 1slice of ham)

Meals for tea vary

3 pieces of fruit total (average) inbetween meals

drink:

cordial (usually around 7-9 a day)

AWow! You need to up your calories. That sounds like you're getting maybe 1200 depending on what you have for tea. Remember that although it's not some secret, ultimate trick, eating at least 5 meals a day is good for you. Even if you don't want to count calories, you'll be keeping your body fed and getting closer to your ideal calorie intake. Like Crym said, if you aren't eating ENOUGH, you can gain weight. What I do is break up my meals into small calorie goals, generally I have a good 300-400 calorie breakfast, then I have four 100 calorie snacks during work, and then 400 calorie supper once I get home. Of course I'm a girl so I only need 1200. You're a male, and you have a different number you need to reach.

Again, it's not for everyone, but if you have a lot of time or have a job/like to sit at a comp a lot, try counting what you eat. Google is amazingly helpful for finding out how much is in what foods (like an apple is generally 50, while a banana is 100!). Eventually you can even get a good idea on how much calories something is going to be, and memorize everyday foods. Then again...I tend to get obsessed over it lol.

sounds like you are doing great. I download books onto ipod (I love to read) listening to a good book helps entertain me during a workout. Walking is really great too, I like to get outside because staring at walls is boring as you said... Good luck with it!!!

Hi BC83! Sounds like you're doing great. Something to consider in your diet is protein. It doesn't look like you're getting much. My family and I took a "fat class" and learned about not only eating better but eating right. Your muscles need protein. Especially if you're working out. You want to gain muscle and lose fat. Muscle burns fat. I don't like to eat breakfast so I make smoothies with soy protein. Loch is very right about smaller meals more often. Picture your food as energy. Your body does better on a consistent steady stream of energy then it does on bursts. Also, like Loch and Crymlyn said its important to make sure you eat enough. According to our teacher, if you lose more than 2-3 lbs per week then you'll be losing muscle. Good luck on your journey! Keep up the good work!!

Thanks everyone, I'll start counting how many calories I eat per day over the next few and 'up it' if it is as low as it seems at the moment. I never feel unenergetic (unless I've just worked out) so I never really though about it :O

Also, do you now if protein shakes are good? Some people tell me they have lots of calories but I haven't had chance to go look at the shops and read the labels etc :B

I'm really into comedy, I've got Ricky Gervais podcasts, YogPod podcasts, Am I bugging you podcast and another comedy one that I can't remember. I'd reccomend them if any of you like comedy (not like stand up, but random things)

Protein shakes vary a great deal in nutrition. I haven't found any premade that I would eat. I buy soy protein powder at our local health food store and add to my smoothies. The one I use is 100 calories for a 1/3 cup of powder and its all protein. So I use 1 cup of low cal OJ for 50 calories, a cup of frozen strawberries for 60 calories, and the protein powder. 210 calories for breakfast and it keeps me going for a few hours.

AYep, I take a protein shake after my workout and it's 160 calories for 2 cups, keeps me good for 2-3 hours.

It depends what kind you get, powder or premade. Those instant breakfast protein shakes are usually 300-400 calories. But if you need a meal replacement, those aren't too bad.

I was thinking they were mixed with water? :O I really don't have a clue haha - I'll google them later and maybe go to the local health shop and ask what is best for me etc :)

Haha thanks but before I went on my exercise bike, I too was on my couch. :p Glad my post was the thing to get you up though, hope it goes well. :)

Also dreading my birthday! There will be cake, and I'm definately going to eat a slice. :( Hopefully, as long as I stick to my workout and diet other than the cake though, it should be ok and I shouldn't see any problems. :)
