injured knee

OK. So, I have a partially torn ligament in my right knee, this makes walking difficult as it is, but I've managed about 20 pounds lost. I want to start getting slimmer too, but I don't know what workouts I can do as far as something slimming because I'm afraid of re-injuring my knee. Any thoughts?

Hi there. Without trying to baffle you exercises can be divided into 2 catagories "closed chain" (where your feet are in costant contact with the load) or "open chain (where they lose contact...like jogging for instance). Your best bet is DEFINETLY closed chain. Cycling is great......even better though would be the ULTIMATE low impact exercise ...swimming. Having suffered serious ligament damage myself( I ruptured ACL, Post Lateral AND Medial ligaments in a rugby injury) I know swimming works. DO NOT DO BUTTERFLY!!!!!! Front crawl ONLY. But laps = weight loss. Good luck and ENJOY!

Workouts are not "slimming" per se. It is the calorie deficit that slims you, and that can be due to a reduction in calories eaten, an increase in calories burned, or a combination of the two. So, if you can't go as hard while your knee is on the mend, just cut back your calories a bit.

If you think you can do exercises to lose weight in certain parts of your body - forget that. It doesn't work. You will lose the weight first wherever it last came on.

Hi Harold,
Absolutely correct. Calorie deficit = weight loss. I'm taking it as a given that they are already dieting and just looking for a safe exercise regime. Sorry if you find that misleading but that's how I read the post. Can you suggest a better exercise (for anyone) than swimming? low to no impact so it's great for the joint, tendons and ligaments.
Regards.........Dave

I wasn't disagreeing with what you wrote, Dave. I'm sure swimming is one of the best exercises for that situation.

From the way the question was written, I suspected that perfectlyflawed might be one of those folks who think you can spot reduce, so just thought I should clear that up.

Hi guys, I know spot reducing isn't possible, but I have already changed my intake of calories, but I just need to know some low impact exercises to take some impact off my knee. A bike my partner's mother will be lending me will work, but swimming is also a fun, and low impact way to do it too. Being dirt poor doesn't help me much, but when the complex's pool opens I'll be jumping in for sure. Only thing with that is there are bound to be lots of people in it, especially with summer rolling around, so that may not always be an option. Thanks for the ideas, and keep 'em coming.
