Increasing Pushups

I've got a problem. Wrestling starts in a month (Nov. 27th) and one of the requirments is that you do 20 pushups, then 20 crunches, then 20 pushups, then 20 crunches, and so on until both equal 100 a piece. This is right after the other, rapid movment, no minute rest or anything. This is every day, too.

My problem is that the best I can do is 10 pushups, 20 crunches, 10 pushups, 20 crunches, etc. up until 50 pushups and 100 crunches.

My question is... what is the best way to increase my pushups in a little over a month? I've searched around and found things like "do pushups to failure 3 times a day" and such things, but I thought it would be better to ask and maybe this can help other people out.

At home, I have free weights, bench (not set up yet...will be Thursday) Swiss ball, ez bar, etc. Not anything big.

Thanks for any help that I get. :)

Thanks, evo. I found an article written by some commie. Interesting read. I think that I'll start a new routine for pushups tomorrow or Wednesday, and follow the directions. What I got out of it was (the article was a little over my head, I think) ... in terms of pushups...

1. Do them often, several times a day
2. Don't do them to exhaustion, or even near exhaustion
3. Do them frequently each week, 4-5 days or so
4. Do just pushups, no variations as that's what I'm going for

So I'm planning on (during a school day) do 5 pushups a little while after I get to school and am fresh, around 9 or so. Do 5 more right before I start work, 2:30. Do 5 more when I get home from work at around 5. Then around 10 or so do 5 more when I'm about to start winding down.

Sound like a plan?

Here's the deal, if you can do 5x20 on pushups, it's likely using type I fiber, so you'll need to build up the endurance in your arms and chest.

Because of this, I would recommend doing push-ups in that way, to failure. Also bench pressing with a weight you can do 15-20 reps/set.

Some strength based work will also help, so plyometric push-ups and explosive bench pressing.

How you organize this is your call.

The best way to do more pushups is by doing more pushups. I would say to do them until failure to build up more endurance to do more. Like Cynic said, its up to you really to find out how it fits you best.

That gives you about 1 mth.

It wasn't hat long ago I worked mysElf up to 700 pushups a day looking good for 1000..

It's only 100 that want.. so I recommend that you stiill do your 20 rep sets up the hundred .. but week one do them witOut the abs and on your knees.. and do the crunches seperate .. week two try dbling up the sets between rests... with your 100 crunches directly after ...
week 3 get back into a full push up for week one's sets still seperating abs.. and week 4 put it all together ..

If you have to start on your knees you just do.. it's better than not making aany yards opn them at all..
also recommend you working on your counting / breathing rythym.. makes a huuge difference.

Good luck with them, I'm sure if you make a progressive plan and hell or high water juast stick to it, you'll be fine;).

i wanted good pushup performence at one point too, but only becuz im competitive, it wasn't required. anyway, the way i did it was i just did pushups till i couldnt do them anymore, 4 or 5 times a day about 5 or 6 dayz a week. also, when you go to do them for your "test", i would do them fast. in my opinion, i can do more when i do them faster. if you go slow, there is more tension and wut not.

Thanks for the info. I guess I'll have to research more of both ways because it seems split.

BTW hadez, it's not just a test, it's Mon-Fri for at least 3 months. lol it's tough

I've found that in the past 3 or 4 months the number of press ups I can do in one go has risen from 25 to 35. This was an unintentional side affect of going to the gym as I don't do them often and don't really care how many I can do.

In the past when I tried to improve press up performance I failed dismally because I tried improving them by just doing press ups more often. I think sometimes you need to take the focus away from that particular exercise, train the muscles in other ways and then go back to it.

Like I said Merciless.. If thats your goal and time to do it then it just is.. if it iis a longer term thing though.. just keep that in mind throughout your work out and talk your self through psycologically that thaat particular set/ day whatever is juust a platform to your nxt better performance next sesh/week and so on.
Set your self something progressive and just get it done. ..Every time.

cheers
